Summary: Full of depth!
Review: This book's coverage on intrusion detection is out of my expectation. It covers not only technical information on various attacks, but it also contains valuable materials on management issues. Topics on Mitnick Attack, Filters and Signatures, Future Directions, DOS, Business Case for Intrusion Detection are particular interesting and useful. Overall, this book is very well written and it will be useful to all of you who are network security practitioner or consultant.

Summary: The essential info you need to know about IDS
Review: This books covers everything you need to know about Intrusion Detection. It deals with all kind of signatures, even the most recent ones. But more important, the book also includes chapters dealing with Intrusion Detection within a company's security organisation.

This book is really a must have in your personal library.

Summary: An excellent book. Could not put it down.
Review: This has to be the best book on the market for Intrusion Detection. I could not put it down. You will learn how intrusion takes place and how to protect from it. The examples of intrusion are extremely useful.

Summary: Excellent book
Review: This is a great book for anyone interested in learning about how networks really work. It explains how to analyze network traffic, how to identify possible attacks, and how to deal with them. It is the best book I have seen on this subject. The treatment of denial of service attacks is particularly good.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Overall a good book
Review: This is a great book. It provides good detail on crucial ID topics. The examples in the book are clear and easy to follow. The book also does a good job of describing IP fragmentation. I would also recommend that someone get Bejtlich's The Tao of Network Security Monitoring. Read Network Intrusion Detection first then read The Tao. You will be an expert in the area of intrusion detection and network security monitoring.

The only down side to this book is that not enough attention is paid to exploring the gory details of networking like Ethernet frames, IP/TCP/UDP/etc. packets. This is an important topic for security people to understand.

Summary: Must read for stepping into Network Intrusion Detection!!
Review: This is my first book on Intrusion Detection field. To step in the field of network intrusion detection, knowing how to read packet trace is unavoidable. This book presents packet trace using the basic and popular sniffer, tcpdump. The author gives various traces and explains what kinds of attacks are indicated from the traces. This is very practical and should give an insight to reader on what an IDS analyst's job like.

I can read this book very smoothly showing that the author should have much experience in presenting this subject.

I'll classify this book as a must-read and is looking forward to read the next one - Intrusion Signatures & Analysis

Summary: Excelent
Review: This is the long waited 'Firewalls and Internet Security : Repelling the Wily Hacker' version for ID. Northcut keeps on the subject without bashing ID or OS systems giving the real basic principles of intrusion detection, very good.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Very practical
Review: This is very practical than I expected. Though volume is not large, this book is easy and managing core contents. I want other books to come more like this.

Rating: 5 stars

Summary: Very very good book on intrusion detection!
Review: Very helpful book for understanding/analyzing attack types. What I really liked was the way the authors explain the material. I guess being an instructor on these subjects for years has an effect. I recommend to everyone looking to learn about intrusion detection and more.
