Summary: The Only Book I Used.   Scored 92%.
Review:

Ron Gilster delivers it all, and at the lowest cost out there.   In a concise, time-saving manner this book gave me all the material I needed to learn for the test, and I'm not an IT professional (yet).   Based on one of Ron's recommendations in the last part of the book, I bought Jeff Thorssell's (Dalidesign.com) practice test software along with a discounted test voucher from Jeff that paid for the software--what a deal!

I put the book away after one read-through and one quick review.   Then I repeatedly took the "Dummies" software tests and Thorssell's practice tests until I consistently scored well into the 90's.   Knew I was ready.   Sailed through the test with no anxiety whatsoever.   The whole process took three weeks.

By the way, a few months ago I also got A+ certified with nothing but Gilster's A+ "Dummies" book and Thorssell's test software (and discounted vouchers).   Yes, I got both certs for less than $50 investment.   What more can I say except thanks, Ron and Jeff, for superb products!!!

Summary: A good stepping stone
Review: A good starter book that will not go over your head!

Summary: Numerous content errors.
Review: I passed my Network+ 886/900. Which means I missed one question. But my high score had NOTHING to do with this title. I also would like to add to the other disappointed reviews that I emailed BOTH Ron Gilster AND the dummies press with several instances of factually incorrect information, asking if any errata was posted; as of today, 12 months later, I have received NO REPLY from either party from the 4 emails I sent.

Ed Tittel from Exam Cram ALWAYS returns emails. Are they unwilling to live up to the same standards?

Summary: Good Starter, But keep studying
Review: I used this book and the Network + Exam Cram practice tests to study for this test. After reading and studying for 2 months I knew I was ready to take the test. I aced all of the practice tests and practice questions. When I first sat down to take the test I thought they had given me the wrong exam. I had not even seen the first 8 questions in either book. The first thing I said was I just wasted my [money]. By the grace of God and much prayer I did pass the test, but barely. Things you should definitely know. All the variables for PING, NETSTAT, NBTSTAT, ARP, ICMP. There were several detailed questions about routers and configuring them? Network Address Translation. One question that threw me was you cannot Ping the router but you can Telnet into it? There were several questions about Telnet. ICMP port 0 on the router is open or closed what does this mean? Maybe I missed something but there was not a whole lot of detail in either book about these. Also know your troubleshooting! Somehow I passed this test but I definitely would have felt more comfortable had I known how much more and what I needed to study. Maybe I just got a hard test? By the way neither testing software is all that great.

Summary: Great cd
Review: I used this book as a compliment/cram guide with the Sybex Net + book. As with the A+ for Dummies, this book has some errors in print, and on the test CD. Unless you already have good knowledge of networking, I don't recommend using it with no other study guide. It is a good complimentary study guide, and the test CD alone is worth much of the cost.

Summary: Good first study book, but don't stop here
Review: I used this book as my first serious study guide for the Network+ exam. Yes, it has some inaccuracies (especially on the included CD-ROM tests - at the end of my test preparation I had to stop using them so the few wrong answers there were would no longer stick in my memory), and there are some areas where the book could have gone into greater depth, but for the money this book is a good buy. I would recommend to the publisher that a second edition with a better content review process is in order (the errata posted on their web site could use some more work as well), but you get what you expect from a dummies book, a relatively light-hearted treatment of an often dry subject. The cartoons alone are worth taking a look at this book. Many of the sample questions from the book are accurate reflections of the questions I saw on my test.

Since the current passing score for the Network+ exam is 82% and the test fee for non-CompTIA members will soon be raised to $190, I would strongly recommend that you also read the Network+ Exam Prep and Cram books, plus check out some of the Network+ Certification resources available on the web. Be very careful to check out the conflicting information you will find (there are problems in all of the books I read and much more junk can be found in the web info). I only missed one question on my Network+ exam, so I can tell you from experience that there are a lot of problems out there. Just do your best to find verified accurate answers to the conflicting issues, and you should be fine. In fact, the only question I missed on the exam was the direct result from an answer I trusted from yet another Network+ book's sample exam that turned out not to be correct! If you are in doubt, check those sample question's answers with as many trusted resources as you can find.

In short, this book can be a good first study aid, or a good last review (I did both), but if you want to pass the Network+ exam with room to spare, make certain you go further in your preparation.

Summary: Worth buying for the CD alone!
Review: I used this book to pass the Network+ certification book. I have had some experience in networking though and yes there were some inaccuracies in the book. It's a good book just to refresh some things before you take the test though.

Summary: Only 1 book is not enough to be certified, dumbo!!
Review: Never ever, that is ever, use only one book and expect to be certified, and if it is Dummies, who would.
On the bright side, this is a great companion, I am using the Osborne (red and denim color) as the text book. But I also heard that the Microsoft 3rd edition is selling well, maybe because it is a new release, where most of the Network+ books are printed in 1999.

Summary: Passed
Review: This is a good book for whom it is intended for; networking dummies! I had no previous networking experience before taking the Net+, so this was a great introductory guide to the networking world. Emphasis on INTRODUCTORY! There is a lot that the book did not cover that is on the exam. The exam also expects one to know the information in much more detail than the book gives.

I recommend using not only the dummies book, but also the Cram Session Guide, transcenders, and Self-Test Software. Also, as I said with the A+ for Dummies review, a great study partner can be one's greatest resource!
