Rating: Summary: From the novice to the seasoned professional Review: I am SQL Server DBA, but many times I referenced this book to help me write front-end applications for our end-users. Anytime that I needed a quick reliable answer, I've gone to this book. I have used many others, but this book is clear and concise. It goes straight to the point and solves issues quickly. Many of my co-workers (vb application developers) come by my desk to lookup things in this book on a regular basis. Although, the book is large by volume, it is easy to find things and the indepth paragraphs take you step-by-step. Not to mention the price is right from Amazon.com. I recommend it highly.

Rating: Summary: Good if you are new for VB but not for pros Review: I bought this because of previous reviews. It is a good book with LOTS if GOOD info. But, I have been programming in VB for over 5 years. I bought this for the new features of VB6. Well. It touches on some, and I mean some. If your a seasoned programmer look elsewhere, if your a rookie this is a great start, really great!
Rating: Summary: Too many mistakes in this book Review: I could not read past the first chapter in this book. There was one mistake after another. The text would say one thing, and the Illustrations would show something different, there were obvious programming errors all through the text (he would tell you to name the button bttnGame, then he would show you the code for it's click event and it would be a function called ShowGame_Click()). He shows code comparing a Double variable to a quoted string, he uses + for string concatenation in some places, and & in others, he names buttons "ClearBttn", "Plus" and "bttnMath" (no consistant naming convention). It really appears that this book was rushed to press without having been even breifly proof read
Rating: Summary: good for the intermediate level programmer Review: I first started learning vb about a year ago and this was the very first book I purchased (going off of friends recommendations). At first I felt a little disappointed with the book and I felt somewhat lost in it. Now that I have more overall knowledge of vb this books seems to become clearer and clearer. I would spend quite a bit of time learning how to make small apps that don't do a whole lot but teach you the basics before getting into this book. The first few chapters are fairly straight forward and aimmed directly towards newbies but before continuing through the book I would pick up a little more experience.
Rating: Summary: This book is great for all levels Review: I found this book quite descriptive and very informative. Even a biginner can follow it easily. The code examples in each chapter are really good and give u a good feel of working of VB. People who are already experienced in programing with VB will also find it very useful as each chapter has something new to know, though a Pro could skip first five chapters, they are very good for beginners. Over all it's a great book to learn from.
Rating: Summary: Non-trivial topics with interesting and practical samples Review: I found this book very helpful. I purchased it because of the detailed discussion of the TreeView and ListView controls. All the samples on the CD work as advertised and I was able to copy segments of the sample code and paste them in my applications (in specific, the code for populating a TreeView control at run time). I also learned about the Scripting control and was able to write a small interpreter and embed it in one of my applications. I haven't read all the chapters, but the ones of interest to me are well written and all topics are demonstrated with examples.
Rating: Summary: Excellent resource for jr and intermediate developers Review: I found this reference as one of the most useful tools in understanding VB concepts...and together with the example codes it has was and still an excellent recource that I go back to from time to time even after 5 years of working knowledge with VB... Indeed it is one of the most useful resources passing by my hand and staying there...
Rating: Summary: Mastering Visual Basic 6 Review: I have been using VB for about 3 yrs. along the away i've bought and used a number of VB books. This is one of the most useful book i've ever use. If u are seriously thinking of becoming a professional VB programmer get this book u won't regret it! This book is not for an absolate beginner but if u have some skill in VB this is THE best book you can buy. i HIGHLY recommed Mastering VB 6 to all VB programmers.
Rating: Summary: Save your money and buy a different book Review: I have to rate this book low. The organization of the book is lacking, the index is incomplete, and the examples are poor and inadequate. You would think a book this large would be more complete. Many topics are missing. For example, I use visual basic for many file i/o operations and this book does not mention one thing about file i/o. There are better books out there.
