Rating: Summary: A DB2 Book that will make you Rock! Review: I bought this book to find out the latest and greatest with V8, but found all kinds of tuning information as well. After reading this book I can now tune bufferpools, SQL and a whole suite of DBM and DB CFG parameters. The chapter on Type-2 indexes really helped me to understand them and there is also a migration plan presented. And the chapter on logical and physical design remind me how a database should be designed. I've already shared that with my data modelers. I'm very impressed with the details in this book. Heck, I carry it with me since all the DB2 catalog tables are in Appendix A. And lastly, the chapter on monitoring on SQL Snapshot functions, with details on how to insert the output into an SQL Snapshot repository, along with the new event monitor write-to-table capability, has given me the capability to truly have a historical respository of performance data.
Rating: Summary: Good tuning advice based on solid experience Review: I found the tuning advice for DB CFG parameters and tuning sort to be verfy helpful. The sort chapter cleared up misunderstandings I had on sort. The information on type-2 indexes was really good. Chapter 10, Monitoring, is the best reference I have found on how to use and interpret monitoring output in solving performance problems.
Rating: Summary: Good DB2 Tuning Book Review: I found this book to be very useful in tuning SQL and bufferpools. I liked the chapter on Problem determination and the utilities section. All v8 utility enhancements are provided.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding! Review: I just received this book and already it has helped me make improvements to my production systems. The chapter on sorts is great and the chapter on monitoring is very helpful. This book is very informative, and a "must have" for any DBA.
Rating: Summary: A fine job.Reads like a fine wine, and has loads of tips! Review: I really like the inside tuning tips and recommendations. A lot of other books describe parameters, but do not really give a recommendation. In this book you'll find many recommendations, not many it depends. For a first edtion, it is well done. I'm sure the next edition will have even more details and examples. I use this book and the Adv. Cert Guide for all my work.
Rating: Summary: Good book written by DB2 Guru Review: I've heard Phil speak and present and this book just builds on the excellent material Phil's provided in the past. It is a complete reference for monitoring and tuning DB2. If you need to know how to tune DB2 and what to look for, this book is for you.
Rating: Summary: A little short on details Review: The book discusses the major features of DB2 V8 but tends to gloss over them without providing the details or real world examples. I have also purchased the Advanced DBA Cert Guide for DB2 V8 and find it contains a lot more detail and information as well as real world examples.
Rating: Summary: This book is the best book written on DB2 by a DB2Guru Review: The chapter on DPF was key for me. I'm getting into partitioning and didn't know where to start. Well, Chapter 13 took me through it step by step. I also think the chapters on tuning bufferpools, SQL, and SORTs are the best I've found. They actually work. My databases are running faster than every before. And the chapter on Type-2 indexes was just what I was looking for. It describes type-2 indexes in detail, and I could easily understand them. I really like Appendix A, DB2 Catalog tables, I refer to this appendix all the time. Hat's off to Phil Gunning for writing such a great book.
