Summary: People Must Understand The Purpose of This Book
Review: Core Web Programming is meant to serve as a comprehensive training reference for beginner and intermediate users of web tools. It seems to lie somewhere between the "In a Nutshell" series and specific references like Sun's two tome "Core Java" series. These people who are slamming it must have missed the generality implicit in the title. Kudos to Marty.

Summary: This is a very useful book
Review: This is a great book because it gives a brief introduction to many topics regarding web programming. True, there are a lot of things that are left out, and the book is very "Javacentric". However, even when I'm trying to do something that isn't discussed by the author, such as CGI using Perl, I am able to understand some of the important issues that can potentially cause problems, and continue on.

One of the things that seems to be the norm these days is that with the rapidly changing face of the computer industry, it is no longer possible to buy just one book on a topic and have it be reliable for years. That is the case with this book. In fact, one of the reasons I like this book so much is that it doesn't go into a lot of detail on any one subject. If I need to go farther with a particular topic, I get myself a different book.

Summary: Poor book
Review: If there is such a thing as "web programming" then it is not shown in this book. A part on Java is porrly writen, more of a collection of author's programs than any useful exposition. The part on HTML is outdated. It is hard to find topics in the book since the index of the book is confusing at best. Poor book overall.

Summary: Hall shows consummate taste in what to include.
Review: This is one of the most useful books in my library. When I have a question about HTML, it is the first place I look. It provides a perfect context for a beginner learning java. Like a good Physicist, Hall knows how to search out the fundamental and useful information. The book is clear, easy to read, and surprisingly comprehensive for a single volume.

Summary: Not what expected
Review: A huge amount of paper! But I needed information on applets and java animation, isn't that web programming? The book has less about that than many 24 hour idiot 21 days books. Very poor. Don't waste money here.

Summary: Excellent Book for Learning Java
Review: An excellent book for learning java, html, and javascript. The book focuses on java programming for the world wide web, but stand-alone programs are also covered. The only problem I found with the book was the index. I had a very difficult time finding methods for different classes and resorted to using Sun's API reference.

Summary: CWP is an excellent book.
Review: CWP is a book worth possessing by beginners as well as experienced people, who are interested in learning Java. The book covers all the aspects of java programming, including HTML, JavaScript, AWT and HTTP. I did not have to refer to any other book during my session with Marty Hall, as the book was self sufficient.

Summary: Best web programming book on the market!
Review: This is the best web programming book on the market today. The only drawback is that it doesn't cover the HTML 4.0 specification, but it covers everything else! I especially liked the detailed treatment of Java. Marty Hall writes in an easy to read manner, so that even people starting out doing web programming can easily read this book without getting completely confused. I also liked how he explained why the commands work the way they do.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of publishing on the web!

Summary: Outstanding Web Development Reference
Review: I thoroughly enjoyed Marty Hall's Core Web Programming. I started out completely ignorant of web development, and now I'm an expert webmaster! Chock-full of examples provided on the accompanying CD, I found the topics easy to comprehend and experiment with. The author's easy style and irrepressible humor made the experience most informative and entertaining. I emphatically recommend the book to aspiring and experienced web developers alike!

Summary: good book, one of the best covering java and cgi together
Review: CORE Web Programming is a the only book I have seen to do a good job at covering HTML, Java, CGI and Java Script.

Its a must for any new Web programmer, and for those of us who are always trying to do new things with Web technology.

The section on Java and CGI regarding POST,GET etc is by far the most comprehensive I have seen.
