Summary: Newbies get some experience too!
Review: I have a couple of years working with security and that experience combined with reading this book is what helped me pass the Security+ exam. I read some of the other reviews for this book, and I was disturbed to see a couple of them say things like "I expected to read this book and pass the exam...." Well, that's the problem with networking and specifically security today. Qualified security professionals are in such high demand that anyone who is not a mouth breather (and a few who are) tries to get a couple of certifications and then get a really good job. It's not that easy. Just look at the objectives for the exam. They don't go particularly deep in any one area, but they are incredibly broad. You need on the job experience to have been exposed to all of the things on this exam. IF you don't, I hope you do fail because you shouldn't be in a position to secure anything yet. You can't expect to just read a book ANY BOOK and pass. That said, if you do have experience and you are going to take the exam, this is the book to read. I read this one cover to cover and I've read large portions of most of the others. This one is significantly better than the rest. It is more accurate and detailed than anything else.

Summary: DVD is worthless
Review: The content of the book is very good and detail. However, the DVD content which consists of 2-3 minute movie clips on the chapter objects is a waste of time. The DVD could have been better being packed with sample tests, vocabolary lists, and a HTML Version of the BOOK.

Summary: Failed Exam - Not enough info and to many errors
Review: For these types of exams one expects to read such a book and pass however this was not the case for both me and my friend. also too many technical errors.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Too many errors, and does NOT match CompTIA
Review: This book had way too many errors, and does not match the actual material! This probably coincides that the book was developed before the actual exam even went live. Nevertheless it is a lot of redundant material for such a simple exam, and does not even match the material, and all with too many typos and mistakes. There are too many other quality material to say that this is a 5 or even 4 star book.

Summary: Complete coverage, matches CompTIA
Review: This is a great book--covers all the objectives that CompTIA has listed, and in great detail (sometimes more than you need for tha exam, but who can quibble with that!). The DVD was worth the price of admission--I'm pretty sure I could have passed just watchign that and not even using the book. But I did use both, sometimes together to study and I found it a great way to learn.

Summary: Several errors...
Review: I've found more than a few errors in this book, e.g. wrong port numbers, decimal dot placement, wrong answers to the test questions and the ordinary typo's. I'm also not too fond of the general layout and items get repeated quite a lot. I studied it thoroughly and failed the exam by 8 points. Some questions in the Security+ exam where definitely NOT covered in this book. I'll try again but with another book, one that is recommended by CompTIA.

Summary: Happy I passed
Review: I just got my Security+ certification, and I must admit that I am pretty excited about it. I studied for a couple of months using mostly this book and I also used the passport book some because that was good at providing an overview once you really learned everything from this book. The test covers a very broad range of things, which us why I liked this book because it went into detail on all of it.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Good Book. But remember the Security+ is for the experienced
Review: I used this book as my primary study guide along with the Passport book. Easy to read and also covers subjects not on the exam that are very useful in real live situations. This is not an exam cram type of book and should not be used as the only study guide for the inexperienced. The 2 hour DVD is poor in quality and low in content but then again for the price what can you expect. Overall, I give the book a four star rating because it was well written and kept me interested.

Summary: Best of the bunch
Review: I studied for my Security+ on a pretty tight budget. I was laid off a few months back, and I wanted to get my Security+ certification to make myself more marketable. I looked at all of the study guides and practice tests out there and decided on this one becasue it looked to be the most comprehensive of all of them. I didn't want to have to buy several different books to prepare. This one is a little more expensive than some of the others (but the same as Microsoft Press), but I chose this one because I think it is the best value in terms of how much you actually get for your money. Well, my instincts were correct, becasue I got certified using this book as my only study tool. Thank you to the authors for (hopefully!) starting me on a new career path.

Summary: DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME
Review: Dont waste your time on this book. I used this book as my primary study guide along with the BFQ tests, and when I took the test I scored a 716. I have 3 MCP's and my A+ and never even came close to failing a test. I studied for 2 months, passed the included online test with a 996 every time I took it, and also consistently scored above 950 on the BFQ tests. With this in mind I felt I was prepared to take the test. Let me add that I wasnt just memorizing ?s and answers. This book goes way off track on most subjects, and doesn't cover critical areas that are tested on the exam. I'd say it covers about 20 - 25% of what is needed to pass the test. There are also alot of typos. Crypto is BIG...HUGE...and the book barely flys over it as its one of the smallest chapters. Now that I wasted about 50$ on this book and 225$ on the test for studying inappropriate material, I have decided to go with the trustworthy SYBEX book. I used these for muy other exams and had no problem. And its certified by CompTIA.

Good Luck
