Summary: Great book
Review: I recently purchased this book. I have a basic knowledge of c++. This book is meant for both who are well versed in c++ and those who are not. Neatly written, I enjoy learning Java from this book. The part of that interested me as soon as I saw it was the quality of the pages used. Unlike other books, this book uses a good quality pages that make it easier for.

On the whole it is a good book and I enjoy learning from it

Summary: Great for learning the Basics
Review: I've read this book cover to cover, and I think it is an excellent way to start programming in java. I think it is a wonderful introduction, my only gripes are that the new GUI interface, Swing, is not covered, only the older AWT. Also, this book is very weak on graphics programming, he never even explains how to incorperate java graphics into programs! He basically writes it off by saying its too complicated.

Summary: Truly from the Beginning
Review: Let me start of by saying, if you want to learn Java to add it to your resume, do not use this book. This book is very very weak on Java graphics programming, which you will need to know. I would suggest a book that would help you pass the Sun programmer, or developer test. This book is intended as a textbook for an intorductory college class in computer science.

This book is great for learning Java as a college, or high-school student. I am using this book for AP Computer science. This book covers all of the topics, except for recursion. The author starts out with talking about what most people need to know about computers. He gets into programming by chapter two, and classes by chapter three. He explains classes very well, but you might need some help. Classes are much more well explained than in Java 2 for Dummies.

All in all this book is very good, even though I couln't get to know that much about GUI, or graphics programming. If you want to know about applets(this book focuses on applications) just read Appendix A. If you want a good approach to Java, than buy this book.

Summary: K.N. King does it again!
Review: Once again K.N. King produced a masterpiece. This book is the best book that I have ever read for students with no prior programming experience. In addition I believe that professional non-Java programmers can gain unique insight and a bottom up understanding of the Java language and of object oriented concepts by reading this book. The text is clear, thorough, and chock full of great examples and projects. If you want to learn Java this book will take you there. You will not learn applets, servlets, EJB, etc. However when you finish you will have a deep understanding of the language and will be more ready then most people to tackle the other technologies.

Summary: Good for Java Beginners
Review: This is a great book for java beginners. But people with programming backgroud, may find parts of the book too lengthly. Overall its a great book and I have benefitted immensely from it.

Summary: Very good introduction to Java Programming
Review: This is a very introductory text on java programming. KN King has written this book in the same style as his excellent text on C programming. This is as good an introduction to Java as one can get - but one needs to keep in mind that this does not cover any of the standard libraries like swing, awt, etc. or advanced topics like threads, databases. It is pitched to a person who is new to computer programming. With this caveat in mind King's coverage of classes, objects, control structures is very good. The organization of the material, explanation, examples, and the colloquial presentation are the highlights of this text.

Summary: Six Stars!
Review: This is an excellent beginner book on Java. The great thing about this book is it's style. A perfect self study book for anybody. I was really impressed by this book and if you want to learn Java this is the book for you!

Summary: Get it!
Review: This is by far the best "first" java book out there. The author makes java easy to understand and apply He's a gifted writer of science, perhaps at the level of the late Linus Pauling. Very impressive. I hope there is a sequel.
