Summary: A comprehemsive, state-of-the-art overview
Review: There are so many books out today on "security" that bookstores are running out of shelf room and readers don't know where to start. And the majority of the books today seem to be thrown together by any and all authors and publishers looking to capitalize on the importance of this subject.

Well, Eric Cole's book is one that should be stocked and should be read. He has written a timely, up-to-date book that every security professional should read and will learn from. While no one text can cover or teach you everything, this book pushes you well up the learning curve.

Eric's book is written from the perspective of the defender. This necessitates learning about using so-called "hacker toolz." But all of the tools are merely two-edged swords. It seems that, as a defender, I ought to know about the attacker's tools so that I can know at least as much as they do about my own network and to learn how to shore up my own defenses.

This really is a must-read.

Summary: Not a smorgasbord of out-dated hacking tricks.
Review: This book is different from the pile of "I wanna be a hacker" pop-computer-culture books that have come out in the last couple years. Reading it was NOT a smorgasbord of out-dated hacking tricks that teaches you nothing about security (or hacking). The book discusses vulnerabilities and penetration techniques in a way which helped me defend against these attackers (it's written from a "white hat" perspective). If you're an aspiring script kiddie, this book isn't for you; if you actually pay your rent by managing networks and keeping them secure (like me) then I definitely recommend this book.

Summary: Trite, trite, trite.
Review: This book takes advantage of the fear of being hacked by presenting the reader with a ton of paranoid, poorly written information. So many books before this one have approached network security in a much better manner. I've found so many mistakes in this book, or critical omissions, that I finally stopped reading it.

Summary: A must-have for every security professional
Review: This book will be a great addition to my library. The book is a great compilation of information on security vulnerabilities and more importantly, how to protect ourselves. Eric has a very easy-to-read style and the book flows nicely from one topic to the next. You can read the book cover to cover or just pick the topic your interested in. Great job!

Summary: Gives 'Hacking Exposed' a run for its money
Review: While Hackers Beware may not be the 'Ultimate Guide to Network Security' in my opinion, it still is nonetheless an excellent book on how networks attacks are performed.

The book details how attackers gain access into different type of operating systems and hardware platforms. More importantly, Cole describes countermeasures to use to defend against the various types of attacks and exploits he describes.

Overall, an excellent reference for anyone needing to understand how hacking works and how to defend against them.
