Rating: Summary: Outstanding Study Guide - Extremely close to the real Exam Review: This book is an outstanding book to have for preparing for the Sun Certified Java Programmer Exam (310-025). I used this book to study for the exam and I passed on my first try! To Mr. Brian Bagnall, I would like to say, "Thank you" for writing such an outstanding book. Mr. Bagnall has done an excellent job in each of the chapter's practice questions and also in the simulation exam -- which was very close to the difficulty of the real exam. I could not have passed the exam without this book. I strongly recommend this book when preparing for the exam. Do not believe the negative reviews. I have a friend that will be taking this exam soon, and I told her to purchase this book. In short, a great book with good programming examples and exercises.
Rating: Summary: Good book, hard questions Review: This book is good. Read it, get familiar with the materials, do some practice questions (but not all) and there is no way you will fail the exam. You only need 61% so its very easy. One thing I don't like about this book is the questions. They are too hard for no reason and made me a little nervous going into the exam. The actual exam are a little easier than the book, so I'm not sure why the overkill.
Rating: Summary: The Worst Computer Book I Have Ever Started Reading Review: The title is not an exaggeration. The other reviews are correct. The book is loaded with errors. Not just typos, but substantive errors that show the author has a substandard understanding of the java language. I wrote the author (his email is not made available in the book, which is a red flag, but I was able to find it by other means) and he ignored me. I took the book back for a refund. I suggest Brogden's exam cram which is less expensive anyway.
Rating: Summary: Very satisfied Review: When I used this book a few months back I was impressed. I went to the bookstore and compared this book with 2 others on the shelf, and this one looked the best to me. I studied for the exam with only this book, it took a while to get through, but I liked the writing style and everything was accurate and easy to understand. I wrote the test and passed with 93%. Some of the comments by two of these reviewers are a little comfusing. I couldn't find anything in the whole book which I could identify as an error, and I know the guy below who said he found an error on p. 98 didn't find an error (try compiling it... the variable is used in the code, therefore it must be given a value. C is incorrect.) Definitely glad I found this book.
Rating: Summary: Not Very Happy Review: If you want to study for this test, do not buy this book. Buy one with more correct answers. This book has many errors and the cd rom that comes with it is even worse. If you want to pass this test take a sun course and save your money.
Rating: Summary: Good study guide - many book errors Review: I found this to be a good study guide for review before taking the exam however I found many errors while reviewing the book. Maybe one per chapter or at least one every other chapter. I am glad I bought the book as it presented many examples and I learned a lot from it, however I am also glad that I purchased two other books to rely on for exam preparation. Some of the statements are wrong or misleading. Some of the code examples, when actually compiled and run, do not produce the same results as described in the book. There is at least one exam question that I can remember to have the wrong answer as the right answer in the answer key (appendix). These errors are easily caught if you have read the chapter and have paid attention or if you know Java fairly well. I wish the publisher had at least reviewed each chapter for correctness. Many of the errors are not hard to find. If you are only buying 1 book to study for Java Certification, I would say skip this one. I went to the publisher website but could not find errata.
Rating: Summary: Some Errors here and there Review: Found some errors here and there. Eg see pg98 question6. Java support blank final variables. So final var need not be initialised with a value. It just needs to be initialised before first use but not during declaration. Pls correct me if i am wrong. Found another in the cdrom. Something to do with thread. But still in the end, this is a helpful book.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: Initially I was impressed with the book,... it was easy to understand and had good examples.... and this made me look over the fact that their website was misspelled on the "About the contributors page" and that Assignments was spelled incorrectly on the back inside cover. (As a title to a section!) Then I realized that the book is missing IO and has many mistakes within some example questions! This made studying for a test difficult. I was lucky to have two friends to study with who each had different books.
