Summary: As always, a great asset for developers
Review: I can bearly keep up with Flash! This book is a great addition to the Flash Magic Series.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: hard to understand
Review: I had trouble with this book. The instructions were hard to understand and the examples didn't start from the beginning. The action script was already done for you and there were bugs in some of them. Not for beginners! If you have none or even little knowledge of flash forget about his book. It's not for you!

Summary: I could't see the point of the book
Review: i had tryied this book for about 2 weeks, i do agree that a lot of codes are not really working, poorly explain the reason why should we du that, and the code itself is very hard to follow even just trying to copy it from the book to the action window bcoz there is no line indecator there.

i am not really sure if this book is for begenner, intermidate, or advance flash user, since some workshop are just as simple as the tutorials that come with the software, but some are very long and hard to understand

this book is not to teach readers how to use the shoftware(or it just fails to teach), and also is not a book of creative idea that will help us out when we run out of idea while designing

that's why i said " i couldin't really see the point of the book"

Summary: Great ideas, terrible code
Review: I have been designing Web sites for years, and was a Network Engineer for years before that. This book is well written and talks about great examples, but it doesn't work. I know Flash. I know a bit about Flash Action Scripting, but I have not been able to get one single script to work correctly. You shouldn't have to read a second book just to get the one you bought to work right. Like someone else said, even the finished examples don't work right, so you can't look at that code to see what's wrong.
I expect much more than that from any book, and I would return this book if I still could. I spent too much time thinking I was doing something wrong to be able to return it now, though.
In summary, buy another book. You will probably be happier.

Summary: Simplified, Advanced, Well Designed and Written
Review: I just received my Flash MX book about 3 days ago and what a find it is. The book itself is well designed with plenty of pictures in full color to follow along with, and easy to read directions and explanations.

This book would be great for any user as many of the applications within the book are real world examples of things most of us would actually use! A rare thing to find.

You need two books, your big fat flash book with everything in it, and you need Flash MX Magic. You name it, Audio, Programming a Game, Preloading, A great scroll bar routine (Ch 4) which anyone can use for many different types of applications, and a great chapter on Dynamic Database work in Ch 14.

Two Thumbs Up!

Summary: Ticked off
Review: I smell a rat somewhere. The one example I reviewed didn't work.. nor did the "finished" version off the cd. Shameful !

Pick up a copy ActionScript: The Definitive Guide instead.

Summary: waste of time and money!
Review: I would like to share my thoughts with everyone that wants to buy this book.
I'm obsolutely agreed that this book is full of buggy codes and errors, even the finished files that provided in the CD are not working. This is really a waste of time and money for just figuring out the bugs!!

Summary: Another waste of time and money
Review: I've been developing sites for over 5 years now. I don't know if that makes me an expert, as there is always something to learn, but I know a good book when I see and use one, and this is not it.

When I am given a project to follow along with, I need clear instructions that make sense. This book doesn't have them.

When I am given code to dissect, I need to make sure it works before hand. This book doesn't have it.

When I am given "final" examples, they should work. Heck, the example animations even play backwards in this book.

Don't waste your money. New Riders should be ashamed of putting this garbage on the market.

Summary: Book for Pros and Learning how to implement the code
Review: I've been using Flash since version 3 and remember buying this particular book for version 4. I buy this particular book because it has specific projects that I can implement now. It speeds up my development time. Do I tweak the code and break it so that I can learn more from it? YES Is this book for an absolute beginner in actionscript? NO This book assumes a certain level of knowledge. If you don't know actionscript and can't recognize the different constructs and where to put them then go find a different book that will teach you that aspect of actionscript. This book is for the pro who wants to work through some projects using MX to quickly get up to speed with AS in Flash MX. Its also for the learner who learns through working through projects. I'm a software trainer and believe me, lots of people learn via working through preexisting projects (I do). You still need to understand the Actionscript constructs before doing this but it complements that by showing you specific examples of actionscript use. Buy this book with another book that will teach you Actionscript like Moock's book or Sham Bhengal's book. Read them together or the AS book then this for specfic examples of implementing code.
Congrats, nicely written and to the point for me.

Summary: Add It To Your Library!
Review: If you've mastered the basics of Flash MX and are looking for more, then Flash MX Magic really delivers. Rather than providing tiny chunks of Flash functionality, the book gives you 15 full Flash projects to demonstrate the features of Flash MX. Yep...actual projects you can tinker with, break apart, break entirely, fix again, and eventually create something brand new!

The book comes with a CD containing all the FLAs and files you need for each chapter project and the chapters themselves are very easy to read with plenty of illustrations. It's always great to see how other Flash developers handle code, and the authors of this book are really among the best in the business.

You'll certainly want a good foundation in Flash ActionScript before diving into this book, but it's definitely one to put on your list. Also, the illustrations make it much more accessible for users who tend to shy away from books that only have lines and lines of code. And let's face it, you can never have too many books on Flash or samples of ActionScript code!
