Summary: An excellent work ...
Review: An excellent piece of work...

... "this is NOT a book for beginners" It is for folks who want to "understand" JBoss

In the next version the authors should concentrate on adding more for newbies, because a great piece of work like JBoss will ultimately be successful ONLY when more developers really USE it.

Kudos to the JBoss team !!!

Summary: Not about Admin/Usage but Internals
Review: Good book if you already know JBoss. If you're thinking of re-writing JBoss or just wondering how it works internally then this is good. Absolutely needs step-by-step guide on how to install a bean. Even the JBoss doc.s on the CD are very weak. Having used WebLogic and WebSphere extensively I have still spent 4 hours and not gotten a bean to deploy AFAICT. Oh yeah, no clients/usage are given for the examples; e.g. they show on p70 code and talk about the J2eeDeployer service as being a web service but give no example code or mention of how to use it! Oh yeah, p14 says to drop jar's in the deploy directory and they will be deployed automatically. Well, where are they? Where are the usage examples for the examples provided?

Summary: Great Book
Review: I feel this is an excellent example of how project documentation should be presented. I would also like to point out that this book (or something very similar) comes in PDF format when you purchase the documentation subscription listed on the JBoss web site. I didn't figure this out until I paid for book and the documentation subscription.

Summary: Not an easy read for a newcomer
Review: I was very disappointed that I paid dear money to buy a book that was really terrible to follow. Perhaps people who are already intimate with the internals of a java application server may find this book useful, but I definitely do not recommned it for beginners. There is precisely half a page (p.17) that tells you how to test if the installation was successful. There is nothing in the book that tells you how to execute a sample application once the server is up - which URL to connect to etc.. If you are a hacker, go ahead and buy it. You will love it. If not, you are wasting your time with this book. It is better to stick with the newsgroups and the jboss.org site.
Sorry Authors, as much as I respect your technical prowess, unless you polish up the user documentation, I am afraid people are going to be turned off and turned away from the product.

Summary: Not a Good Tutorial but a Good Reference book
Review: Initially I thought I can kick-start my JBoss installation and immediately jump into the detail of how to develop J2EE application and deployed it using JBoss application server. But my hope was totally shattered. I have tried Sun Microsystem's J2EE before and the tutorial is good and straightforward.

I hope the good reputation name of JBoss application server does not shunned the new comers due to this good reference book.

Almost 90% of the book described in detail the JBoss internal working principle with specific Java technologies. The free document supplied from Jboss home page is much clearer and better than this book that's totally useless for beginner.

Summary: Little strange book but better than nothig
Review: JBoss documentation is fair. I would recommend to get this book because it's only documentation available for JBoss. I bought PDF file from jboss website online instead of book - recommend you to do the same. They sale also clustering docs as well..

Summary: NOT about How to Develop or Admin JBoss
Review: Mostly useless to a J2EE developer or someone that needs to Admin a JBoss installation. The title must have been the brain-child of some marketing clown at Sam's. In addition the content is presented in a random and incomplete manner.

This book covers version 2.4. The latest version of JBoss is 3.0 which only has about 20% in common with 2.4. Do NOT buy this book if you are running 3.0!

Summary: Poor choice if you want to learn how to develop on JBoss
Review: Pages 351 to 389 walk you through the process of building and deploying a simple application using JBoss. The remainder of this 500 page book discusses JBoss internals.

If you're wanting to get a quick start on building J2EE applications on JBoss, this is not the book for you.

Summary: Great book, but not for administrators
Review: The book has lots of great information, but the title is quite misleading. There is really very, very little on administration. No step-by-step process of setting up the server. No strong explanation of how to configure the servers, whether in a single or multiple server environment. For administration--1 star. But the Development piece is quite good and for that purpose--5 stars!
