Rating: Summary: A Good Book, But... Review: After reading and devouring Dreamweaver 4 Magic, I couldn't wait until Dreamweaver MX Magic was published. Now, I am sort of disappointed with the projects presented in this book. It is more of a book of Dreamweaver MX tips and advice on how to make the most of MX. Still, it is a good book- one that will certainly compliment anyone's knowledge of Dreamweaver MX. The NewRiders site will state that presenting the tips, tricks and advice was their goal. It was certainly achieved. A good read and worth the ticket price, but don't forget to take a more serious look at Dreamweaver 4 Magic.
Rating: Summary: A Worthy Read Review: As the author of Dreamweaver 4 Magic, I'd like to toss in my two pennies. MX Magic is a most valuable book. It's concentration on tips, tricks, and dynamic issues is worth the fare. New Riders has done an excellent job of assembling a team of authors with varied voices to trumpet in the best Dreamweaver version ever.
Rating: Summary: Have fun with this book Review: Dreamweaver MX Magic is a delight. It really is almost like a box of chocolates and you get to pick out whatever piece you want to try. There are thirteen unique projects that cover a wide and useful range of real-world website needs. Each chapter is stand-alone so you can target whatever you need to learn. Each chapter begins with an explanation of what you will accomplish. The accompanying CD provides all required files including copies of the finished projects.Step-by-step you are walked through the project until it is complete. The steps are very precise and do allow you to complete the project without holes. (Initially copied to the PC, the files are locked but Dreamweaver automatically prompts you to make them writable.) However, as the book states, this is not a beginner's book and it does expect familiarity with Dreamweaver, HTML, and the specific topic at hand. Several times I had to reread a step in order to understand what was intended. Yet, it's all there. No hidden steps. There are two features that make the book very resourceful. One is the timely screen shots so you can get a visual as to what menu/tab/property to change. Sometimes the screen shots can be tiny at times, but then the necessary parameters are circled. Another nice feature is the extra "notes" that explain nuances such as browser differences or how to maneuver the page in Dreamweaver. Nothing is overlooked. This is simply an excellent companion book on how to accomplish specific website functions by using Dreamweaver MX. If you're comfortable in Dreamweaver and need guidance on using it to create solid and functional websites, you won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: The perfect follow-up to Dreamweaver 4 Magic Review: Dreamweaver MX Magic is a great follow-up to its predecessor, Dreamweaver 4 Magic. World-class web designers share concepts and hints that simply cannot be found in the software's documentation or help files, and take the reader many steps beyond what one would think you could do with the program. Templates, cascading style sheets, content management, dynamically-driven sites, search capabilities, image maps, the use of extensions -- all covered in individual, project-based chapters. A great way to learn!
Rating: Summary: Easy to follow instructions Review: DREAMWEAVER MX MAGIC AUTHOR: Sean Nicholson, Brad Halstead, et al. PUBLISHER: New Riders REVIEWED BY: Barbara Rhoades BOOK REVIEW: The very first thing you notice when you open the books is the clean page layouts and clearly written instructions. It is laid out in step-by-step, numbered format that makes it very easy to follow. As you work through the various exercises, you will notice blocks of text set in a partially framed green box. These contain various notes, warnings and tips. Dreamweaver MX Magic has plenty of exercises to work through and have graphical views of the work so you can't go wrong on what you are suppose to be learning. A CD comes with the book and contains the following information: all the project files, trial versions of Dreamweaver MX, Fireworks MX and Coldfusion Server MX, as well as extensions, plug-ins and a list of web links where you can get help and other information. Ever wished you could change one thing that is in every page of your web? Project 2 and 3 will help you work in a template and explain what it does to help you design better. Or how about a search engine on your site so your customers can find that certain item they are looking for without having to look through all the pages of the site? Project 8 will teach you how to do it. Then there are layers and database-drive username and password to learn in Project 12 and 13. Dreamweaver MX Magic will provide you with a solid basic understanding of a few of the special features in this new Dreamweaver/Fireworks program. If these are the programs you design in, be sure to get a copy of this book. It will be well worth the price of the book.
Rating: Summary: Good Tutorials. Review: Dreamweaver MX magic I like it, it has most of the stuff that new developers want to learn, such as content management, username and password validation. The format has been thought out and is easy to read. Check out the "index of techniques" I bet this book is what you have been looking for.

Rating: Summary: Dreamweaver MX projects can help you achieve "magic". Review: Great collection of practical step-by-step projects that will improve the reader's websites. While intended for the web designer with some experience, many of the projects are fairly basic and most are clearly written and easy to follow. Expecially useful to me were the chapters on building a basic template, using CCS and building an on-line portfolio (I'm also a photographer). I also plan to use the chapters on adding a "crumb trail" and search function to my websites. If you can use only 1 or 2 of these projects, the cost of the book is covered - and then some.
Rating: Summary: Gems buried in the projects Review: I have been a fan of the New Riders series "Magic". This one does not fail to deliver. As with other Magic books, even if the project is not up your alley, there are so many great gems of tips and tricks that only add to your skills set. Inspiration is intangiable product of this book too. Many of the projects will spark some kind imagination here. Just can't recommend this book enough. Best on the market.
Rating: Summary: smart AND pretty Review: One of the great joys of life is finding a book that is not only enjoyable, but also well designed and beautiful to look at. Dreamweaver MX Magic is not just clear and concise in relating its information, but also a thing to behold in its design and layout! Dreamweaver MX Magic assumes you have a working knowledge of Dreamweaver and Fireworks. From this point it sets up projects based on the lesson of each chapter. The files necessary to each project are found on the included disk. The book takes you step by step through each project, using screen grabs to illustrate the necessary actions to be taken. I highly recommend Dreamweaver MX Magic. My productivity has quickly increased to the point that not only will I ask my boss for a raise, but I should have more time to work on my novel at the office!
