Rating: Summary: Awesome Book for New Programmers! Review: This is one book that I can whole-heartedly recommend for the beginner with expectations of being able to finish the book. I am very tiered of books that claim to be for the beginner and start out that way, but anywhere from one third to two thirds of the way into the book start making jumps that the beginner cannot follow. Mr. Smiley will make sure that everything in the book is clear to you. I think experienced programmers will probably feel like the pace is too slow, but it is NOT geared for experienced programmers. The book takes the approach of placing you in a class that Mr. Smiley is teaching and it probably makes a little too much effort in that regard. This is especially true when there is discussion of a couple of students that have to leave the class due to a work project taking them to sea and then latter welcoming them back. Despite this fact, because the author does such a thorough job of making sure every item is explained as it is introduced, I am willing to over look that. I am also happy with the idea of the book being based on a single project being finished as opposed to just code snippets and then throwing a complete program with no explanation as some authors are fond of doing. Bottom line if you are new to programming or want a book that is geared that way, THIS is the book to get!

Rating: Summary: Easy to Learn Java Review: With all the information in the data processing area about Java, Java Script, Jave Beans and Java Server Pages. Where do you start. As someone that has been in the data processing business fro over 20 years. I found that starting with the "Learn to Program with Java" a great palce to start to learn the Java Programming language. The book starts with the system life cycle(SLC) which every business is using. It then explains the Java environment and finally steps through and builds and the information presented in each chapter. The project is the same from the beginning of the book to the completion at the end. I have use other books written by different authors and the books have either jump around with the concepts being taught or the chapter workshop were differnet for each chapter. I highly recommend this book for anyone that wants to learn the Java programming langage.
