Rating: Summary: Very Disapointing Review: I've had great luck with some of the Visual Quick Start guides and had high hopes for this book. My objective was to learn enough JavaScript to make our Web pages more functional and interesting. Also, I'm pretty well-versed in HTML so I'm not exactly clueless. By the time I was finished with the second chapter, I was thoroughly confused. I would have preferred that the authors built on the language and then provided practical applications. Instead that threw a lot of basics at you in the first chapter and by the second chapter were throwing some fairly complex algorythms at you like randomization. Another complaint is that some of the scripts they give you don't work. At least not in the browsers I used. I am a technical writer and trainer by profession and this book appalled me. Hey Tom and Dori if you want to write a book that makes sense send me an email. One more thing. The authors wrote in a cutsey style that continually irritated me and that I found somewhat patronizing and condescending.
Rating: Summary: Incomprehensable Review: I bought this book based on the wonderfull book HTML4 for the World Wide Web by Elizabeth Castro, published by the same people. I guess that was my first mistake. Unlike Miss Castro's book, this book gives scripts that would be ver usefull, if they told you what to enter. Even using the same exact scripts that are in the book, a browser will not read them. Instead of substituting words to be replaced to fit your own content, you get cryptic entries like parent.content.document.location.href with no explanation of what they mean, or what should go in them. I hope if a third edition is released that adresses this, there will offer free copys to all unfortunate people who wated theyr money on this book. I think i'll go buy JavaScript for Dummies...
Rating: Summary: Excellent for those familiar with object based languages Review: This book is a wonderful reference for those already familiar with object based languages such as C++. Even those not familiar will benefit from the code examples, however, experienced OOP's will be able to quickly "pick up" javascript without having to sort through countless pages of handholding.
Rating: Summary: Great book for a beginner Review: This is a great book for someone who has no prior experience with Java. It has a great companion web site where you can simply copy and paste the scripts that are used in the book rather than re-typing them, which is a plus. On the down side, they don't give much explanation on how to personalize their scripts to your needs. This is a great book for the transition from HTML, but probably not the best choice for someone experienced in Java Script.
Rating: Summary: A book for an intermediate user Review: This book is a good source for basic java script It helps in the development of a web page. This book has no long explanations which is a plus for a person who just wants the straight code.
Rating: Summary: The best book for starters ! Review: It precisely gave me what I am after (=Concepts). I strongly recommend this book to people who want get started very quickly and easily. Authors are very open to suggest and point to good and elaborate on-line resources, books and much more. I really admire their openness and clear understanding of the subject. Each page in this book stands out as a trik to do some thing very useful. I am sure these are all part of the tool box of all JavaScript gurus. After this book move on to read "Java Script, The definitive Guide" by David. After a long time I bought a book and I am happy for my investment. Authors have done an excellent job.
Rating: Summary: Great Intro to JScript, A NECESSITY for new web programmers Review: This books gives first time web programmers a jump start into JavaScript, all the code examples are explained step by step and it covers a variety of ways you can use JavaScript to enhance your site and make it act smarter. Great for learners but isn't really good as a reference book, this book doesn't go into too great a depth into the language so don't think this is the only book you're going to need if you want to start writing powerful scripts. It does however list a number of other sources where you can get more information and supplies some good tables of JavaScript commands but doesn't explain them all. Still as a beginner's guide, it's wonderful.
Rating: Summary: whose torture device is this? Review: My first day with this book and already I want to rip it up into itty-bitty pieces. The scripts are printed so small I can barely make them out, and when I apply my own images, I can't even get them to work. I wanted to learn to write my own scripts, but this book is concerned with spreading their own around your web pages. They also try and write humorously but fail most of the time. Try another manual first.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book -- if you've programmed before Review: This book is just what you need if you've already had experience with at least one object-oriented or object-based language. One week after skimming this book, I had already written a blackjack game that used images and handled Aces like it was supposed to. If you've NEVER programmed before, however, this book may not be for you.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book with practical examples Review: This book offers many examples of javascript used in web page design. The examples offer adequate comment regarding the code, and cover the majority of topics that someone unfamiliar with javascript could use in their own web pages. I found the examples of immediate practical value in enhancing my own web pages. I think this book is a must for those of us who have been stuck in the world of designing HTML-only web sites for too long!
