Rating: Summary: they know their stuff, they can't communicate it Review: if you had three books on the GNU build system and were ready to delve into the arcane details, this would be an excellent book. if you are looking to learn how to use automake and autoconf to manage a small to midsized project, this book is worthless. the authors jump from the basics to esoteric problem cases and back frequently, and there is no help for those who do not already know the system well.
Rating: Summary: Best book on the subject. Period. Review: In the end, this book is the best on the subject. There are others but they fail miserably in cross platform support. If this is what you are looking for, then this is what you need.

Rating: Summary: Not so well done, refers to old software Review: The books doens't give you the gory details you need about M4 and the whole design of automake/conf (understating those requires addictional readings and troubleshotting). It doens't cover the details about using autotools separately. It also refers to automake 1.4 and autoconf 1.3 which are now outdated and deprecated. I think this book is usefull for first time users, but not for experienced users which requires more details.
