Summary: A good book on FreeBSD
Review: There are not too many books on FreeBSD and I was glad to see another book on FreeBSD. The book is slanted for people just starting out. It covers the basics, but really the meat of the book is using FreeBSD as a server. It also covers setting up certain key services like a web server, sendmail, or samba. I recommend reading "The Complete FreeBSD" before tackling this book or "Unix for dummys" is a good Unix starter book. There are some terms and concepts used early on in the book that the reader may find a little confusing if it's his first Unix book. I do think that book does a great job of emerging the reader in the world of FreeBSD and the Unix world. The author does a great job of placing links to websites to pursue more information about software that he only briefly talks about. The author also does talk about trouble shooting FreeBSD if things go wrong, which in my experience with working with computers happens more often than I would like. The author also talked about other places you could get information, such as newsgroups, email lists, manual pages which is a very important source of information when trying to get something to work. This book now sits on my bookshelf proudly next to my 1st and 3rd edition of "The Complete FreeBSD" book.

Summary: Excellent introduction to freeBSD
Review: This book reperesents an excellent introduction to freeBSD for andministrator experienced in working with Windows NT/2000. All the major topics are covered in a very readable way and readers are invited to make a decision as to where freeBSD will fit into their architecture - Mittelstaedt just presents the facts. All in all, the book is worth 5 stars for two reasons. Fistly, it achieved what it set out to do and secondly, it converted a cynic like me to freeBSD. Eneough said!

Summary: A good place to start...
Review: This is an excellent book for those that want to get started with serious uses of FreeBSD. It's a great desktop platform but it really shines when used as a server and this book tells you how to do that. Even if you're just getting started setting up a larger network at home or if you're using FreeBSD in a real corporate enviornment this book is great.
