Rating: Summary: exactly what the doctor ordered Review: Having made my first MFC applictions and then immediately run into a brick wall as SOON as I wanted to do anything apart from fill in the TODO: sections I was desperate. Eugene's book is outstanding giving you practical tips for doing all the things you really want to do with MFC. At the same time the tips manage to expose the working of the beast so now I have a much clearer understanding of how MFC actually works without having to read a pure how-mfc-works book (although I've read a few of those too). If you use MFC, or tried to use it and got fed up, if you think that it's too hard to write decent apps. with MFC and are firing up VB, go buy this book and dip in every time you have a question. I hated MFC, now I love it! The layout of the book is perfect, it's pretty much its own index and cross referenced all over the place. Eugene - write more books like this please.
Rating: Summary: Excellent source of information!!! Review: I'm a new MFC developer. I bought several books on MFC at the bookstore, but this book is by far the most useful. I refer to this book more often than the other books. This book has been a wonderful source of information. If you want to look like a pro, then this is the book to get. I hope he comes out with another book soon to cover Visual C++ 6.0. He also took the time to answer my email!
Rating: Summary: Great for the working programmer interested in productivity Review: While The MFC Answer Book is not a beginning MFC book, it is not an advanced level book either. If you know how to get Class Wizard to generate a message handler, you will be fine with this book. It is perfect for the working programmer who needs answers, not theory. Yet there is theory too - the theory that goes with the specific answer. I have put The MFC Answer Book on my bookshelf within easy reach. It is a great book.
Rating: Summary: This book is a must have for all MFC programmers! Review: 'The MFC Answer Book' has helped me tremendously. The style of the book is exactly what most people need. The table of contents is a list of questions in the form of 'How do I ...?' or 'What is the ...?' In the text of the problem you will find a brief explanation followed with step by step instructions on how to solve the problem. In just a short amount of time, I added the following features to my application: 1. A custom dockable tool bar to my application. 2. Docked the tool bar beside the default tool bar. 3. Added dialog controls to my tool bar. 4. Added tool tips to the controls on my CFormView. 5. Added UPDATE_COMMAND_UI notification to my CFormView. 6. Changed the font of a dialog control. I just wish I had an excuse to apply more of the book to my application! Too bad that Microsoft doesn't provide help like this.
Rating: Summary: Going beyond the Microsoft Documentation Review: After spending days trying to figure out certain aspects of the Document/View architecture with the Microsoft documentation, I gave up and purchased the MFC Answer book. I should have done this in the first place. The book details exactly how and why the document/view architecture works (along with a whole of other items I didn't even realize I should know about). It was very easy to understand. And while it did not answer all my questions, it definetly set me on the right path to the remaining questions I did have. If you are a serious MFC C++ programmer, this is a book you should have in your library.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book ! Every MFC developer needs it !! Review: This book is very nice among all the MFC books I've seen and bought. Had a problem or doubt get the answer right there and proceed with your proje ct with out any delay
Rating: Summary: Good Book with limited scope. Review: The things that it covers, it covers extremely well
Rating: Summary: Wow!! Wow!! WOW!!! Review: Regardless of whether you are interested in learning MFC at all, you just have to be impressed with this book. The organization of it alone is in a class by itself. Equally impressive, though, is the content. Answers to your questions seem to flow from the pages as if the book were reading your mind. The material the author covers is extremely useful, and organized in an easily accessible way. I wish that more book were available like this.
Rating: Summary: Very useful topics and techniques; well written & organized Review: A definite buy for anyone seriously working with MFC for software development. In my judgement, this book is a much better reference than the VC++ HOWTO book. Very useful information in the text that show you where to learn more while still doing a very good job of explaining the topic at hand. As an MFC developer myself, I have been looking for a book just like this (the VC++ HOWTO was the only other one and it just doesn't cover as many good topics).. this book fills that spot quite well! // CHRIS MORSE - Norwalk, CT
Rating: Summary: An excellent book and a friendly author Review: If you are satisfied with the AppWizard generated code, don't waste your money. If you're using MFC in really serious projects, then you 'must have' this book! By simply following the step-by-step instructions, you can immediately solve most of your problems, especially, user interface problems, which always are the most difficult part in Windows programming. Therefore, you can use it as a handbook. However, if the book only had this, I would reluctantly think it an extraordinary book, even though it covers many things that other books do not cover. What makes it an extraordinary book is the explanations and additional comments that follow the step-by-step solutions. These comments unveil many MFC internals, and explain how MFC works behind the scenes. From there, you can definitely learn many things that you cannot learn from any other books; and those things are absolutely useful in your day-to-day Windows programming. At the end of the book, the author also recommends some useful articles, books, and valuable web resources, which you may find very interesting. By the way, I once asked the author for help in getting me some of the articles, and was amazed by his prompt response - Thanks Eugène. All in all, an excellent book and a friendly author.
