Summary: The Robin Williams of Web Graphics
Review: Just as Robin Williams has made design and layout accessible to someone who DOESN'T have a degree in design, Lynda Weinman makes web graphics easy and fun. I like her friendly, casual tone and she does a great job with the screen shots which are clear and always relevant to the subject at hand.

I knew nothing about dithering, color depth or why I really *needed* to upgrade to Photoshop 5.5 before I read this book *grin*. My graphics have gone a radical shift from a fairly complicated feel to an extremely simple one, that is not only a positive change but one that makes my webpages load much faster.

If you've ever looked hopelessly at the "Indexed Color" dialog box in Photoshop, wondering what you were supposed to do with it, this book is for you.

Summary: A Web Design Book Worth Having!
Review: Lynda Weinman is great!! Her book is comprehensive, covering just about everything you'd like to know about web graphics and HTML. Her writing style is clear and friendly, and this is a book worth having for beginners and experts alike. Very clear and understandable. A pleasure to read and learn from.

Summary: Wordiness detracts from the content
Review: My limited knowledge on the subject made this book educational. It was written like most of us speak (phrases like "ya gotta") which made it easy to understand, but also made it VERY wordy and repetitive. . .10 pages of reading felt like 1 page of learning. Bulleted chapter summaries and excessive pictures only made this worse. If you are new to the subject, then you should find it useful, but if you're buying it based on content, it is definitely not worth the price.

Summary: don't knock the macs...
Review: now i notice that many of you are whinging about the mac screen shots. I can assure that the majority of design and publishing is done on macs, not PC. And with many products, especially those by Macromedia, are exactly the same on PC it's no wonder the screen shots are on mac as most web designers use a mac, it's a simple majority, she is certainly not locking you out. P.S. I use a PC and don't own a MAC so don't think i'm one of those mac addicts.

Summary: For Persons Professionally Serious About Website Design!
Review: The Internet is becoming a more graphically oriented broadcasting medium. Web graphics have been going through a number of changes to meet the demanding needs of online use. A number of other factors are involved as well concerning Web graphics. When we think of Web Graphics our minds may focus primarily upon graphic images such as photographs, banners, and buttons. We need to look beyond these and view the entire look, feel, and design of Websites and individual Web pages as graphic works of art in need of adequate treatment.

Lynda Weinman has written Designing Web Graphics 3 to assist Web designers to prepare graphic images and other media for the Web. Weinman, the author of a series of well respected graphics books, provides an extensive learning experience in this, the 3rd edition of the book. She provides a sweeping treatment of Web graphics theory, design, and use. She offers clear instruction on how various color controls work, she gives insight into the purpose of browser safe colors, she covers the use of animated graphics, and loads of other helpful graphic image information. She does not stop here, however.

Weinman offers her readers a wealth of Website design strategies that are innovative, attractive, functional, and easy to incorporate. Topics covered include Website architecture, navigational solutions, the use of frames and cascading style sheets, background tile design, creative font embedding, DHTML, using digital cameras, and the use of software programs such as Dreamweaver, CyberStudio, Photoshop 5, Flash, Shockwave, and QuickTime. An excellent listing of Web graphics resources is provided at the end of the book to offer further Web design assistance.

Weinman comes across as an excellent teacher of Web graphics and design. She knows her subjects well and demonstrates throughout the book her superior ability to express herself in an easy-to-read writing style. The book offers a full-fledged education. Few books offer the rich detail this one does! Must reading for those persons professionally serious about Website design!

"As and educator, nothing pleases me more than to teach others. Teaching people about the Web is not an easy task, however, since there are so many unfamiliar constraints and rules. For me, designing for the Web is not about dogmatic ideas and rigid principles. Instead, it's about harnessing the power of design to enhance ideas and communication." - Lynda Weinman, from the Introduction

Summary: Not a book I would recommend

Review: This a great book, if you do not have time to read online tutorials. However, most of the information can be found on the web.

Summary: Take Caution -- Book is probably not for you!!!!!!
Review: This book attempts to cover too many specific design packages. You are presented with step by step instructions on how to do so and so using either photoshop, imageready, fireworks, and sometimes other packages. All instructions and illustrations are on a MAC. I got tired of reading the same old stuff. Once she tells you how to do it in one package she goes on to explain it in the remaining 3 or 4..... Soooooo repetitive. Not worth the money and not a good read for the pc user. Mac maybe.
