Summary: Best for 70-219
Review: Do not waste your time on this one !!

Read this Training kit twice, understand the rules (how may gc, dc, site links etc, in place upgrade etc), then, you must use the Transcender 70-219 exam, then print the questions with each study case out and analyze them (worked for me)

took me 6 weeks, scored a 660 needed a 620, long case study, easy questions, NO PASS/FALL, plenty of time, no trick questions
just use your brain !!1

bye, ciao

good luck

Summary: Vague with no sample case studies!
Review: I found the this book very frustrating to read. The way it was written in some parts left you scratching your head, even if you re-read it 3 or 4 times. And I've already passed 70-217, the new concepts weren't explain very clearly, at least not well enough for a novice to Design to grasp. However, the most disappointing aspect of this book was that it didn't even have one practice Case study! I mean getting use to the new MS test format is half the challenge. You can study this book inside out, but on test day, you'll be totally lost. Go with Transcenders or even the Sybex book instead.

Summary: Review of MS Press Designing Directory Services Infrastructu
Review: I found this book to be very very sketchy in technical detail, concentrating more on the business analysis side of things. There were lots of references to fictitious companies which was quite helpful in demonstrating concepts etc, however, after having read this book and numerous Technet articles, I'm inclined to say, if your buying this book as a reference for your own AD design, save yourself the money and read the Technet articles related to AD design if your focused on the Technical side of things such as where to locate GC's and DC's etc. Very few facts and figures presented in terms of, for eg, how many DC's would be needed at one site to support x number of workstations.

Summary: Right on for 70-219 exam!
Review: I used this book to pass the 70-219 exam with a great score and finish up my MCSE for Windows 2000. This book rightfully assumes you have already learned the material for and passed the 70-217 Active Directory Administration exam, and therefore will not waste your time on covering redundant material. A thorough expertise in dns is a must also. The study text is only about 330 pages - less than half of the other 70-219 books, but it is to the point and covers the material for the design exam very well. The second chapter gets too heavy into the business analysis end - almost like a graduate level business strategy class! Read it but don't worry about memorizing any of it, it did not prove that helpful to the exam. Just remember that business needs may override what might be the ideal or logical solution. The info in the last chapter about integrating Active Directory with Netware and Exchange was not covered on any of my four case studies either. What you need to know for the exam and is explained very clearly is how to determine the number and structure of forests, domains/trees, organizational units, sites, dns namespace, and trusts based on the info in the case study. The number and placement of domain controllers, global catalogs, operations masters, and dns servers is also heavily covered. A brief overview of upgrading/migrating to Windows 2000 is covered and necessary for the exam. This is a very organized and logicaly thought out book with a chapter each devoted to forest, domain, organizational unit, and site configuration covering concepts on why you would choose a certain path (domains versus multiple forests or organizational units, etc). While the book does not contain an "example" exam case study, each chapter has excercises that are effective in helping you prepare. Read this book as many times as needed to understand the concepts presented for Active Directory Design and you will be very well prepared for the exam.

Summary: optimal choice for passing 70-219 in short time
Review: If your goal is to obtain MCSE 2000 certification as soon as possible, then getting this book to tackle 70-219 should be an optimal choice.

Or, if you have passed the 70-217 test and would like to find a concise yet comprehensive study guide to prepare/pass 70-219 in very short time (say 7 days), I suggest you check out this book.

Because of higher price set by Microsoft Press, I had never read any of its publications for preparing my MCSE tests. But, I couldn't find appropriate book for 70-219 until I read one of the reviews about this book in this web page and decided to give it a try. I would say the result is beyond my expectation.

The author does a good job by organizing what you need to pay attention in 5 short chapters. The subjects -- forest plan, domain plan, organization unit plan, site topology plan, migration plan -- and the styles presented by the author match nicely with what Microsoft tests about in 70-219.

In fact, if you can jump over some of the irrelevant or less important pages, this can be a five star summary guide better than some of the Exam Cram series.

Here are a couple of tips that may help you to further cut your study time:

1. Skip Chapter 1 and Chapter 2: it will save you nearly 90 pages reading time without negative impacts on the real test scores.

2. From Chapter 3 on, read each "Lesson" section thoroughly but skip "Activity" and "Lab" sections altogether. It would be quite efficient if you read every word in each "Lesson" and get solid understanding about the "reasons and advantages for choosing certain design strategy" and then supplemented with close-to-real test questions compiled by Tran___der.

Overall, since the threshold for passing 70-219 is not high, you might easily overkill it by relying on this book alone.

Summary: Very Good
Review: This book covered all of the basics need to pass the exam. It didn't have that many practice questions, but it covered the necessary topics. Not bad for an MS Press book.

Summary: This book alone won't help you to pass 70-219
Review: This book taught me how to draw a site, a domain, a domain tree, and a forest. There aren't any new technical material about Active Directory on this book.

I passed this 70-219 because I took it about 2 weeks after I took the 70-217. I was still fresh with the Active Directory stuff. And I studied the Transcender in that 2 week to be familiar with the exam format.

The key to this exam is to figure out how many forests and how many domains to use.

Summary: Very instructive book
Review: This is the second book I read about the 70-219 certification and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to take the test. It is very well structured and the even the more difficult concepts are explained in a way that makes them relatively easy to understand. I noticed several big mistakes in the examples or exercices given, like in page 250 and 279 where the forest root domain is simply missing, or perhaps the biggest one page 363 where you can find 5 SM and 5 DN in the same forest ! Dispite these evident errors that should be correted in the subsequent editions, the book is still interresting and worth a good 4 stars in my opinion.

Happy readings...
