Summary: A Mediocre reference. Beginners Beware!
Review: I was a beginner when I bought this book and figured I could get pretty much what I needed from a "bible." In fact, I found this book to be poorly organized, full of omissions and very confusing to follow. The authors are so excited about CSS that they give HTML short shrift... not good for a book on HTML. I also encountered a lot of fluff on usability that could have been left out, but I suppose bibles are supposed to be thick to justify the price. The chapter on tables totally omits any reference to page layout with tables, something I find really unbelievable. I guess the authors think that CSS makes layout with tables a thing of the past. As a reference I guess this book is okay but it suffers from poor organization. Frankly, I was upset that I spent this much money on such a marginal book.

Summary: This book claims to cover more ground than it does.
Review: I was dissapointed with this book as definative reference once I had read the whole thing. Basically there are many more filler pages than any other computer book I have read. I found some of the information missleading. Had I not taken a course with a profensional designer. I would have missed many things about HTML possiblities had I stuck to this book alone. Good reference, not a bible.

Summary: A very good book on HTML!
Review: I was learning HTML 3.2 and later found out this version of HTML was outdated. I also found out the newest version of HTML is 4.0, so I decided to look for a book on the 4.0 version of HTML instead of continuing to learn 3.2. I came across HTML 4 Bible, read the description, and read the reviews. After reading all of this, I decided to order the book. After reading the book, I would apply some of what I learn by practicing HTML 4 on my computer. After doing this, I was really impressed with HTML 4. I like this version a lot better than I like 3.2. People who are getting started with HTML will learn a lot easier with 4 than with any other version! The only thing I didn't like about the book, is that it did not cover enough basic JavaScript like I expected it to and the theory was kind of boring.

Summary: HTML Bible converted me
Review: I was somewhat intimidated by learning more about HTML, e.g., learning a new syntax for Cascading Style Sheets, but the explanations in the book were so natural and easy to follow that my apprehensions soon disappeared.

I would definitely recommend this book to others and will refer to it often myself.

Summary: Excellent, easy-to-understand reference book on Web design
Review: I'm a beginner and have found this book to be invaluable in getting a great-looking web site up quickly. The conversational style of the book made it easy to read and easy to follow. I especially liked the section on determining the goal of your site before creating it. It helped me avoid the common pitfalls a first-timer might experience. I would definitely buy other books by these authors.

Summary: Experienced HTML programmer loves it
Review: I've been programming in HTML since the World Wide Web first gained popularity, and let me tell you something, this book is magnificent. It allows both the experienced programmer and the novice to learn the new HTML 4 Way, from simple tags to style sheets to JavaScript, this has it all. And for those expert programmers, this is a handy reference tool, as well.

Summary: The Fastest 903 pages I've ever read!
Review: Okay, well maybe I didn't read every single page, but what I did read was excellent. It's a fast read. Every time I sat down to read a paragraph, I'd find I finished the chapter. The explanations are clear; the examples are relevant. It also makes a great reference. There are so many so-so books out on Web-related topics, but this one is one of the few that I would highly recommend.

Summary: Found a number of new things and a few shortcuts as well.
Review: Teaching HTML for the past 5 years I have certainly found that there very few really in depth reference manuals, this book does have some really nice features, however at the same time there things that confused me about the book.

One thing I found odd was the 4 pages covering XML/XSL, after reading this I think the author could have left this out of the book and expanded and very good section on severs and server options.

Part III, development of pages with HTML is very good with fairly good coverage of each section. In the next edition they should bring some of the web editors more up to date. One section I found to very well written is Part IV or CSS, the authors seem to have everything covered here.

Part VII - cross browsers, deal with DHTML and JavaScript, I found this section to be okay but certainly more, much more information should have been included. One of the most impressive sections of the book is Appendices A through G, which is by far the best breakdown of attributes, CSS syntax, color and hex conversion I have ever seen.

The cd included is mostly made up of trial version of software and most of the software has newer version available, so this will also need fixing for the next release. Overall, since I don't need the eval software, I found that the book certainly serves a purpose and for those new to the HTML arena this book should be helpful.

Summary: A Decent Overview of HTML
Review: This "Bible" eases new HTML-coders into the language very gently and contains a variety of info. It introduces a very specific way to learn HTML 4 in tandem with Cascading Style Sheets and eventually JavaScript, which is theoretically the best way to learn the language... however some of the positioning tricks the authors suggest are still not supported by all browsers, and alternatives are not always suggested. There are a few typos that will frustrate more than a few readers. After spending time actually coding pages, the reader will want to find a specific answer to a nitty-gritty question or problem, but will only find an ambiguous "gloss". The book is a good start for anyone who is anxious about jumping into HTML. For the serious web builder and experienced coders, it offers a different slant on HTML 4, and excellent descriptions of CSS, etc., but will eventually need to be supplemented with another reference. It's not quite a "Bible".
