Rating: Summary: The Perfect Book Review: As an individual who possessed a minor knowledge of Flash seeking to learn more I found the book "Flash 5 for Windows and Macintosh" to be the perfect book. Whether you have no knowledge of Flash 5 and are just starting out or have a good basic understanding and wish to advance to an intermediate level this book is the perfect learning tool.Flash 5 for Windows and Macintosh is easy to follow, very instructional, well written, well structured and chock full of information on the broad scope of Flash functions. This book does not leave you guessing about what is being taught, and even after finishing with Flash 5 for Windows and Macintosh it remains an excellent resource for commands and instructions that I refer to over and over again. I highly recommend this book for anyone beginning in Flash 5 or those who wish to advance their skills to an intermediate level.

Rating: Summary: Good one, but leave something important without explaining Review: Basically, it is a good book for the beginner of Flash. Four star is my general idea. Folowing is the shorts: 1. Shape tween part needs to be improved. The explainning is poor. 2. The connection of different scene is totally untouched, which actually is very mportant for green horn learner. 3. Too much pages are devoted to plain drawing skill, which actually is not differnt from other software and should not waste about one hundred and fifty pages.
Rating: Summary: Terrible Review: Don't buy this book, not only does it leave you frustrated because of the lack of explanation it also gives you no idea's on actionscripting, all you will do with this book is read over and over the steps wondering where you are going wrong because the explanations are wrong, they might as well just pasted a 5 over the old 4 books and sold it as a new one, I can't wait for the 6 version, I'm sure that will be a repackaged 4 as well !!! SAVE YOUR MONEY-get some other book!!!

Rating: Summary: It's a good "first" book, but you'll need a second book Review: For the absolute beginner, it's a good book. From zero knowledge, you can actually begin to create simple Flash animation at the end of the book. What the book does is familiarize readers to the complex user interface of Flash...what tools are available and how to use them. The author however, presents Flash in a modular format without attempting to present an integrated whole for all the features. Okay, so now the reader knows the individual functionality of the tools, frames, scenes, etc. but as a beginner, you're left wondering how to integrate the use of all these tools to create a seamless whole. Providing a chapter-by-chapter exercise on how to develop a full-blown interactive animation for a fictitious company, progressively integrating the lessons from every chapter would have been an excellent addition. That way the reader would also learn the chronology of steps required doing the project. Although the author made it clear that ActionScript was beyond the scope of the book, it would not have hurt to include an Appendix for the entire Actions List with a brief description on what they do. That way, the reader would have a reference handy to experiment on his/her own. If you're looking to create a Flash movie with a lot of user interactivity, you can buy this book and a second book that will teach more on Frame Actions/Object Actions and ActionScript. However, if you simply want a stepping stone, then this book will do.
Rating: Summary: Nothing New Review: For the life of me, I can't figure out why this book was published. Anything you want to know about overall Flash functioning was already covered in the Flash 4 Quickstart Guide. What's worse is that the Flash 5 guide doesn't focus on ActionScripting--which is the heart of the Flash 5 program. The publishers really didn't seem to bother with producing a new book. They just put a new cover on an old one. Lazy, lazy.
Rating: Summary: Leaves out important steps! Review: Horrible book! It leaves out important steps for beginners! Example: in telling you how to do a shape tween (p. 304), it neglects to tell you to select "create tween", something a beginner would not know. It tells you to get a certain tool, or go to a certain window, but does not tell you where it is or how to get to it (and some are hidden quite well in Flash) This book leaves out a lot of important steps that are unique to Flash, but goes into lengthy detail about things that anyone could figure out, like how to draw a circle with the circle tool.
