Summary: I wish I could return this book.
Review: One of my 5 Flash books that I am NOT happy with. Should have returned it when I had a chance. If you like looking at the book's site and get no inspiration; and, have the time to try and decipher what the author is saying after reading many many pages, this book calls your name.

Summary: Don't buy this book!
Review: This book falls short from giving you the details of what you need to successfully use Flash 5. I cannot recommend it at all!

Summary: Just what I needed - Action-polooza!!!!
Review: This book has increased my knowledge and ability to apply ActionScripting in Corporate Level Flash Apps. Well written and easy to follow/apply. Incorporates asp/flash techniques for communication with DBs. Lots of other goodies too. That's all good!!!!

Summary: Still a very well rounded book.
Review: This book is a significant improvement to the Flash 4 version. The content remains strong with a broad and strong foundation. The big improvement comes from a much more confortable layout and larger type. The new design is easier to follow, and will give anyone interested in learning the fundamentals of Flash almost all the tools they will need to produce good results in Flash

Summary: not quite as good as one of the other books
Review: This is a good and useful book, but it could be better.
Each function is presented first with explanatory prose, then with step-by-step instructions. The explanatory prose doesn't make any sense until after going through the step-by-step instructions.

After a few chapters, I decided that "Flash 5 Hands-on Training" (0201731347) was easier to understand, so I switched books.

Neither book, however, gives clear instructions on how to create navigation buttons. I had to spend hours of trial and error.

Nor does either book explain how to make input boxes and provide feedback for an educational program. I am having to purchase a few more Flash 5 manuals and hope that at least one of those manuals will help me.

Summary: Excellent Book backed by superb email support
Review: This is by far the best coverage of Flash 5.0 ActionScript I have found. The author's clear prose and liberal use of examples included on the companion cd rom have allowed me to quickly learn the ins and outs of Flash web animation and programming. He also provides outstanding email support, not only answering my question quickly, but also attaching an example illustrating the solution described in his return email.

Flash Graphics, Animation & Interactivity is an excellent investment for first time Flash users as well as experienced Flash programmers upgrading from an earlier version.

Summary: Great auther
Review: This is the best reference book ever! I followed the book step by step and learned many Flash shortcuts and details that I can't find in other books. I try to work on one sample in this book. However, there are some codes wrong in my application and I couldn't find the error. So, I got enough guts and sent the author an email. the author replied me the next day, and helped me to solve the problem. He also explained my mistake. Pretty cool!

Summary: This books sits in a dark closet
Review: Want to learn flash? Get the FOUNDATION in Flash book. I ordered a couple of books for flash including this one. I though this would provide more detailed GRAPHICS and interactivity after the basics were learned. I opened this book, I then opened the Foundation in flash book, then proceeded to put this one away for future exploration. The Foundation in flash book was great, an ongoing project in each chapter to develop a flash site, tons of pictures and step by step instructions..etc.. I came back to this book and was amazed at how different, dull, and General it was. There really was no Special Graphics or interactivity here. The Foundation of flash book had more examples of actionscript and interactivity than this. So if your looking to learn flash, don't get this. If you want a reference book on basic flash with a little bit of actionscript that you want to keep in a dark closet to read again "Just Incase" you missed something, then, well this book is for you.
