Rating: Summary: OK. Everything is fine. How much does it cost. Review: All said and and done I cannot locate the price of the book on the page any where. Very usefull eh?
Rating: Summary: This CD offers both my books in a revolutionary package. Review: As the author of Effective C++ and More Effective C++, I've had access to electronic versions of both books since, well, since I wrote them. I've wanted to give you on-line access to them for years, but it wasn't really practical until HTML and JavaScript, etc., emerged as electronic publishing standards. On this CD, I've exploited those standards like they've never been exploited before. The CD includes capabilities that are, as far as I know, unprecedented. These include: - Dynamic user control over the size of images, navigation bars, and HTML files. You configure things *your* way. - The ability to bookmark and/or link to *any paragraph* on the CD. You can now set a bookmark that takes you *exactly* where you want to go. Among other things, this is useful for linking your coding guidelines to the technical discussions in my books that back you up. - The results of full-text searches link to specific *paragraphs* containing hits, not just to specific documents. No more "double searching", once to find the document, once again to find the correct place in the document. (I *hate* that.) - Links from the CD to the Internet go indirect via an on-line lookup table, so links on the CD remain valid even when Internet URLs change. (I also hate broken links.) Of course, the CD includes features you should be able to take for granted in an electronic publication, e.g., color images and diagrams, lots of links (there are thousands, and I specified every last one of them), the ability to legally copy the material to a hard drive for faster and more convenient access, etc. If you're familiar with my books, you know I have definite opinions and I'm not afraid to voice them. I voiced them repeatedly during the design and implementation of this CD, and it shows. This isn't just an "Effective C++" CD, it's an *effective* CD. I spent more time and energy on this project than I did in writing *both* editions of Effective C++. I honestly think you'll find the CD to be informative and useful for years to come. If you don't, I know you'll let me hear about it :-)
Rating: Summary: Essential reading for every C++ programmer Review: Even if you already have paper copies of Scott's Effective C++ books -- and you should, if you're a C++ programmer -- you will probably find the online version indispensible. It's a website-on-a-CD containing all of the text of Scott's books, and more. "Indispensible?" you ask. Yes, that's what I wrote, and I know it's a strong word so let me tell you some reasons why I find it indispensible personally: It's full-text searchable. It's thoroughly cross-hyperlinked. You can create links from other documents, such as your development team's coding standards (hint hint), directly to specific pages and paragraphs in the CD -- and this is especially useful if you put the CD on your LAN. And you'll get information you won't find in the paper versions, including late-breaking information in magazine articles from people like Tom Cargill, Jack Reeves, and other past and present writers for C++ Report -- including some of Scott's own later articles. (Disclaimer: Yes, one of my articles also appears there, but I get no benefit from recommending this CD because I don't get a penny if you buy it. I'm recommending it because I personally love it and use it routinely, and I think you will do the same. My fondest wish is that I can get other books, including my own, available in this format... Scott and Addison-Wesley are working on this and some other very cool related ideas.) In short: Run, don't walk, and pick up this essential reading for every C++ programmer. Even if you already have paper copies, there's a lot more here for you from one of the world's leading consulting experts on the C++ language, Scott Meyers. He is regularly consulted by everyone from defense companies to the producers of the world's best and fastest electronic games. Through his books, you will get the same benefits in the comfort of your home -- and now, in the comfort of your LAN or laptop.
Rating: Summary: Good (CD-ROM) book and easy to search (than paper book) Review: Excellent book. And it is very easy to jump around among different topics. However, I would not recommend this CD to rookies.
Rating: Summary: More features than you could ever want! Review: I happen to be a friend of Scott's, but if I didn't like the CD, I wouldn't be writing this review. To call Scott a perfectionist is to call Pluto cold. It is true, but doesn't capture the extreme nature. If something isn't exactly right, it practically infuriates him. That really shows in this CD. He didn't just set out to make hyperlinked versions of some dead-trees products, he set out to fix what he saw as bugs in the browsers/HTML itself. No small feat, especially when you try to be platform-independent! As a result, the CD is very pleasant to interact with. Frequently, documents that started life on paper and get converted to hypertext still look like paper documents. In particular, it is rare for previously-paper documents to be richly hyperlinked. Not this work. Every possible place that could have a link does -- even in the comments of code fragments. This makes rooting around for more information very easy. I, like Scott, prefer paper documents for some things. I don't think I would try to read through all the material straight through; I'd read the paper versions for that. However, as a *reference*, this work beats the paper versions hands-down. You can bookmark, you can explore, and you can navigate in about five different ways. In addition, it makes it trivially easy to grab code examples for use in your own work. Try cutting and pasting from a (paper) book! I highly recommend this work.
Rating: Summary: No C++ Programmer should miss this book Review: I have read the online version of this book and I am totally impressed with the presentation and addressing of minor details. I have really learnt a lot of minor but important details of C++ programming and would suggest all C++ programmers to read this book. I have seldom seen any other books addressing these simple but most intricate things of C++ programming.
Rating: Summary: Simply Amazing Review: I never realized how much I *didn't* know about C++ until I read this book. This is a must read for anyone you isn't yet a C++ guru. Even experienced programmers will find this book enlightening.
Rating: Summary: Excellent material now in an easier to use format. Review: I recently purchased the "Effective C++ CD" and really like it. Other reviews of the two equivalent hardcopy books have already pointed out the excellence of the material. I purchased the hardcopy version of the first book ("Effective C++") a number of years ago and it has been a major resource for improving my C++ programming and OO skills. I now have the TOCs for the CD-based version of the two Effective C++ books in the personal bookmarks toolbar of my web browser at work, along with a couple of online STL references and the C++ FAQ. If I find myself having a C++ question while I'm writing code I use the browser to jump to Scott's books to find out the correct way to do it. I like the CD format for a number of reasons. I find it easier to jump around in a browser than thumbing through a hardcopy book. I increasingly use my web browser as an online programming guide, so this helps me to have everything in one place. Also, I happen to work in one of the world's sloppiest cubicles, so having reference materials online is rapidly becoming the only viable alternative. : - ) This material has helped me become a better programmer, and I strongly recommend it. Std disclaimer: The above views are my own and not necessarily those of my employer.

Rating: Summary: You need the Fundamentals to do it right! Review: I've been writting C and C++ for about 7 years, and this CD has help me sharpen my development thoughts and the way I approach problems in a much more effective manner. Sometime just hacking at code is OK, but, you need the right tools to build a great product, so I highly recommend this to make your skill set more solid.
