Summary: Great for S7 systems but not much general PROFIBUS info
Review: This book has detailed practical information on using PROFIBUS with SIMATIC S7 systems and the STEP 7 software. It is very light on information regarding PROFIBUS in general. Only a few pages are dedicated to the various PROFIBUS physical layers. The Fieldbus Data Link (FDL) is given even less attention.

I was hoping this book would spoon-feed me the specs for the various physical and data link layers available in PROFIBUS. Then I would dig into the spec once I had learned in plain English what PROFIBUS was all about. Instead, I found myself digging into the spec right away. There's not that much detail in the book.

I am doing some development using a system that is different from STEP 7. Some of the stuff from STEP 7 carries over but not all that much. I wish the book were more general.

If you're working with a SIMATIC S7 system, I think this book will be a great help. It goes into great detail without being difficult to read. If you're trying to apply the information in this book to another PROFIBUS system, the book will be less useful.

For general PROFIBUS info, I would recommend PROFIBUS: A Pocket Guide. That book literally fits in your pocket, costs as much as a full-sized text, and has as much information as a full-sized text.
