Summary: Excellent Book
Review: The BEST guide for development with VB and SQL Server. Entertaining style makes for fun reading. Mr. Vaughn knows this subject cold. I am looking forward to his new book on ADO.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Comprehensive information powered by a poor language
Review: The information is very interesting for a starter. The language is very noisy and distracting which leads to a perception of significant time lossage when reading the book. It's a pitty, that MS Press hasn't published the "Inside ADO", which it has announced, as it could contain more or less the same information and at the same time keep up with the usual high lingual quality typically mastered by MS Press.

Summary: A must have book for VB developers doing data access.
Review: The terrible thing about on-line reviews is that often times very happy readers don't write them. So I thought, it was about time I did.

I've purchased that last three editions of Bill's book. Why? Because simply put, 'It is the best book on Microsoft data access technologies available for VB developers'. It focuses on one back-end, SQL Server, and the multitude of API's available.

The irreverent tone which some people find 'offensive', IMHO, simply adds character to an industry which at times really needs it. The code samples which I retrieved from the CD, always make getting up to speed quick and easy. Having heard Bill speak at VBITS and spoken to him, he is always trying to provide VB developers with the best information.

The seven detailed chapters on ADO are well worth your money even if you have the previous editions; not to mention the details on the T-SQL debugger in its own chapter. Also, even if this is your first purchase, the previous edition's chapters on VBSQL and ODBC are still included on the CD! For many of us, ODBC still has a place in our development lives.

The code Bill gives you is designed to focus on data access. If you need help with VB skills or UI design look elsewhere. But if you want down and dirty code focused on how to get to SQL Server, buy this book.

Summary: Arrogant MS "Guru" Cant Write
Review: This book in a nutshell is horrible. I don't know what some of these other guys in the ratings are talking about...maybe they work for MS..who knows. They might as well call this book RDO VB5 and SQL Server 7..its out of date. The jokes vaughn makes (which is the whole book) are boring...you'd fall asleep after the first chapter. To make things worse...there is absolutely no pictures showing steps or a procedure to follow to create examples..its straight through boring text. A lot of this stuff barely works since at the time ADO was being worked on a bit more. There is NOT enough information on bounding data to VB from SQL Server. Do not waste your money....this book royally stinx!!!!

Summary: Need to program in VB6, ADO & SQL Server 7.0 keep looking!
Review: This book is a rewrite of the 5th Edition and we all deserve better! This book is not well organized. We the general programming public need a complete ADO / SQL 7.0 reference book from a reliable MS source! We are all sick of paying $50 bucks for books that are not worth $5. The best new book that I've found on VB6 and ADO is Teach Yourself Database Programming with VB6 in 24 Hours from SAMS at only $19.99. Bill do you ever read your books? This book had a good reputation once. It probably was originally a good book! But it needs to be reworked badly! I'm looking for the Definitive Book on VB6, ADO and SQL Server. Anyone know of a book that matches this description?

Summary: Are you a professional developer? Vaugh doesn't think so...
Review: This book is a wonderful overview of the history of data access using Visual Basic. It provides amazing insight into 16-bit programming and DAO. It doesn't even begin to provide an experienced developer with anything useful with regards to VB and SQL Server. There is nothing here that isn't in the manuals, and the author's sense of humor is an atrocity. I couldn't bring myself to finish this book. If you have never used VB for anything beyond Hello World, then maybe this might be useful, but I suspect that the material would go over your head. If you are a serious developer looking for some more info on ADO/VB6/SQL7 - keep looking.

Summary: Excellent for professional.
Review: This book is excellent if you understood COM concept.

This book requires readers totally understand COM and be familiar with the basic things in database programming in VB. If you are not, don't buy this book and look for others related to COM and VB database programming. This book should be last one to be read in the field of VB programming in DB.

This book successfully described the architecture, the organization, the principles, the mechnisms of the system which is made from VB and SQL Server. After read this book, I think it is not neccessary to seek for others to help you understand MS DB programming. This book really shoot out everything, even include something from Microsoft "black-box".

Again, this book is the best one in the field of VB DB programming as far as I know.

Summary: A great Book
Review: This book really surprised me, it's great. The author it really helped me to understand the various microsoft database aproaches and how to gain benefit or avoid the pitfalls of each.

Summary: I should have listened!
Review: This book will someday be a great show on PBS. But as far as learning VB and SQLS dont buy it. After several hundred pages of recent history I finally got to the reason I bought the book. On about page 800 and something the author finally talks about using an ADO Datagrid to SQL-S. Unfortunately he never goes beyond a simple example using the Data Object Wizard. I'm still looking and out $40.
