Summary: This book makes you want to learn more!
Review: A good judge of a book is, does it make you want to learn more. This book does just that. This book gives you a great overview of web languages and how they interrelate and work together. For getting started on the web without the use of a WYSIWYG program, this is one of the best tools to have and use.

I would have liked a more indepth look at the elements of HTML 4. However the elements that were discused I now understand very well. Ms. Holzschlag, does a wonderful job of teaching coding work habits. By sticking with her sugestions I can see down the road the benifits that can be reaped.

Ms. Holzschlag, reminds the reader often the need for cross-browser support without showing her bias to one browser. She explains throughout the book how to do this.

In-short: This is a must read for the beginner. However for the intermediate or advanced it may be to broad and/or basic.

Summary: Biased and bloated but still useful
Review: Although a useful reference (especially the CSS and HTML library at ther rear) HTML4 was bloated by screenshot after screenshot to display the bleedingly obvious. An obvious preference towards IE over Netscape led to a unequal treatment of certain issues such as CSS and Javascript compliance and the author's "hollier than though" attitude was offputting to say the least - I would not purchase another book by Ms Holzschlag.

The book could easily have 200 to 300 pages shaved off with a positive effect on both cost and bulk.

Summary: Using HTML 4 Fifth Edition
Review: An absolutely fantastic, must-have reference. Perfect for the budding amateur who knows a fair bit but not all. A simple, accessable tag guide towards the back of the book along with the detailed insight which is easy to find. Sometimes you wish it would stay on one subject longer but there probably wasn't room. Also there is a brief but helpful guide to some of the more complicated sides of web design including CGI and XML.

Summary: Great Book, A great way to learn HTML and CSS to it's full
Review: Being a programmer and already knowing languages suh as Java and Perl, I received this book as a Christmas present, and decided to use it as a reference, but after a while and after having a good look through the book, I decided to read it! It will teach you a lot even if you are an expert or beginner. The book also has a large amount of Chapters on most other important things in the Web world, which may seem boring, because you only bought it to learn HTML but are very helpful to someone who is just starting out!.

A Great Book by Molly, Thanks Mum (My Mum is the one who gave me the book)

Summary: Too much like a textbook, and for beginners only.
Review: For my money and time, the gold contained in this book is not worth the digging. The reason I say it is like a textbook, is that textbooks often seem to not be written so that the reader will be able to be quickly productive.

The section on DHTML spends some pages looking at DHTML in IE, but none specifically looking at DHTML in Netscape. (In the book's defense I will point out it is about HTML 4, which is a standard not completely adoped by MS or Netscape; it is not about being productive with the HTML used by IE and Netscape.)

Serious developers please note the following two quotes: From page 51, "However, if you're in a professional situation, you're going to have to ask your HTML expert to sweep up some of the code mess conversion utilities create and add your graphics and code by hand anyway." From page 413, "It's perfectly possible to call a function from inside itself as well as from inside another one. This is called recursion, and it is a risky thing to do."

All in all, I did not find this book to be in the least concise, and found it to be superficial in its covering anything beyond what I, as a developer, would consider basic HTML.

Summary: Is it a book about Html at all?
Review: I bought this book thanks to it's great reviews but i was really dissapointed. It's not a book about Html in the first place! A lot of it is spent on other topics (javascript, css, xml, cgi, asp, databases, vbs, active x!) covered in a useless manner: instead of explaining their connection to HTML (if any) they just throw some lines of code in your face.

A great part of it is also spent on general design issues which though not bad in themselves ARE NOT HTML. And it doesn't stop here: it goes on to deal with graphic formats, typography, even with Adobe Illustrator! But hey,I thought i bought a book about... oh I forgot! Believe me several times i had to look at the front cover to verify it wrote HTML 4 and I haven't lost it yet.

HTML itself is poorly and unevenly covered. META tags are absolutely missing for example as well as other usefull stuff, such as forms. Even then most of the (few) pages that deal with HTML are full of repetitiveness: for every new line the whole code is repeated! Anything else you could wish for? Ah,yeah: to add to this bulky (and really heavy) junk and complete the fraud a css reference is included in the end as if you could do anything with it. Unbelievable!

This book is just patchwork that has a little bit of and a little bit of that but nothing to do with HTML (it's not even usefull as a web design book). My personal impression is that it was compiled within a night to get (our) money in their wallets. I took a complete piss out of this book and felt quite cheated. It's a shame!

Summary: Good All-Around Resource
Review: I expected to find more in depth coverage of HTML and other technical topics than this book actually covers. The book covers a broad range of topics, from basic HTML to JavaScript, XML, site design, graphics, maintenance and marketing. If you're looking for a book that covers a lot of topics in one volume, this has a good, up to date coverage that's more on the surface. There's even a whole section (5 chapters) on multimedia and embedded objects. I would recommend it as something to pick up and read about something you're interested in or to get an overview of some new technologies. For more in-depth coverage of just HTML or any one of the other topics covered, I would recommend you look for a different book or consider this one as a supplementary resource.

Molly Holzschlag has a nice no-nonsense writing style that I like - I highly recommend her "Web by Design" book if you are looking for something that emphasizes design topics.
