Rating: Summary: A beautifully explained and well organized book. Review: This book was recommended as a supplement to the Java class I am taking at my university. The author does an excellent job taking time explaining the basic Java concepts in this book. The book is very easy to read and you can tell that a lot of time and thought has been put into writing this book. Like the title of the book said, this book is an introductory to Object-Oriented programming with Java and so covers only basic Java concepts. Many Java topics, especially advance topics, are not covered in this book. You will definitely have to buy other Java books to fill in the holes. My major complaint about this book is that it is way over-priced, considering how flimsy and poorly constructed the book is.
Rating: Summary: Not worth it Review: This is a supplement to my JAVA class in college, and it is not a great book. The book is REALLY overpriced, is flimsy and NOT worth the MONEY! (in comparison to other JAVA intro books that explain the material better). I am also a novice, and although he gives all these examples and it is somewhat helpfull at times, it does not teach well and in conjuction with my prof. who does not know how to teach, it is not a great combo. I actually bought another JAVA book so I do not have to read this book. The author is really wordy and makes it more confusing than it needs to be. IN short, do NOT waste your time with this book because it can be a waster of time, look into other intro books... maybe if it were cheaper it would be a better buy, but in this case, i say look for other book.
Rating: Summary: Chock full of errors and typos Review: This was the assigned textbook for my first graduate-level programming class. I was told that the first edition had tons of errors and that the second edition was vastly improved. Yikes! We used the second edition and it was unbelievable how many errors there were -- in the explanations, in the formulas, in the chapter review questions and "quick checks." In addition, there is an ancillary web site for the text that purports to include error listings and corrections. BUT, the listing does not exist, even though the edition has a 2001 copyright date. We were lucky to have a good professor who helped us identify the errors. Otherwise, I would be one confused, frustrated, novice 'programmer'.
Rating: Summary: Full of error Review: unfortunately this book is assigned to be the text book of my java programming subject... the online quiz and the text are full of errors... many questions regarding to the javabook package but who will use that package when they write their own program...??? don't buy this book..there're heaps of better books avaliable. some of them are even free..say Thinking in JAVA. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME ON THIS BOOK UNLESS YOU ARE ADVANCED ON JAVA AND WANT TO TRAIN YOUR EYES TO PICK UP ERRORS.
