Rating: Summary: Totally Excellent! Review: I'd been making our company's install programs for quite some time when I stumbled upon this book - and I must say my life would have been a lot easier if I had known about it months before.I happen to think that the Installshield web site and help files are quite good, if you have a good idea of exactly what you are looking for. When you're not sure however it can be difficult to find the right information. This is one of the areas where the book is great - giving overviews, sample code and explanations of why you should do certain things in a certain way. If you have someone at your place of work just starting off with InstallShield make sure you buy them this book it will save them a whole lot of grief. If you're already familiar with the product then I'd still recommend it as it will probably show you a few things you hadn't thought of. (Although the book is aimed at InstallShield 5.1, the author is going to release another chapter on the web for version 5.5 When its up you can look at it here
Rating: Summary: I like this book! Review: I'm very surprised to see people use this place to criticize other's work instead of reviewing of book! This is a nice and "only" book I know for beginning to mid-level installshield developer as the author has commented. It started from basic, simple install program to more complicated install skill. I don't know how Mr. Easter was three years ago, but I am sure he is an expert at Installshield now! I check the book every time when I have problem.
Rating: Summary: Well done. Excellent examples illustrate functionality Review: I've done installs using WISE and recently moved to a new company that was an InstallShield-only shop. In the few weeks that I've taken to read this book, I feel I have a clear understanding of the available (and best) techniques for creating installs using InstallShield. The examples and supplied modules are excellent. They alone are worth the price of the book.
Rating: Summary: A Best Free Teacher Always by Your Side! Review: If you already had Installshield class, this book is the best recap. If you have not had the class yet, this book covers most of the materials in class in detail and ..you could go back to any section a thousand times if you need to.
Rating: Summary: A "must-have" for every InstallShield user Review: If you are new to software distribution: You can't live without this book. It gives a comprehensive explanation of the concepts of setup programs and the releated issues. It also is a handy introduction to the InstallShield5 setup toolkit and will save you lots of pain and trouble while getting started. If you are an experienced setup developer: This book will make your live easier. It covers advanced topics like component based uninstall, calling WinAPI fuctions and customizing the built-in wizards. On the CD you'll find a valuable collection of functions that you can directly use in your script. I wish I had this book two years before..
Rating: Summary: A must read!! Review: If you are planning an InstallShield project, or have an existing one, this book is a must read. It gives very good detail into InstallShield, how it works and how you can use it to your advantage. It is very readable and very well done. I've done many InstallShield projects and felt comfortable with it, yet after reading this book I realized how much I still didn't know. This book should be a part of every developers library, even if you don't use InstallShield, it has good information about the process of installing a program. Mark Nischalke, MCSD
Rating: Summary: Out of date Review: Overall, the book is good. Better than the IS docs anyhow. Bear in mind that the book is written for Version 5.1 and below. InstallShield made a major switch to an event-driven installation and script model in Version 6.1 So a lot of the examples are out of date and need to be converted. I found this confusing as I was trying to learn and port to the new version at the same time.
Rating: Summary: This book is excellent Review: Plain and simple... this book WOULD have saved me quite a few pains in developing installations... however... I was only lucky enough to read it in time for it to cure A LOT of pains developing an installation which runs in 14 languages and is as complicated as it gets... almost all major problems and issues I ran into are covered... and it is a great reference... I am waiting to begin learning windows installer until this author publishes another book... hopefully it will be as high quality as this one.

Rating: Summary: Leslie's Codex; A first class book on InstallShield Review: The book was in my mailbox when I arrived home last night (thanks Amazon) and I was pleased to discover that I uncovered some new ideas within 10 minutes of browsing. Registering DLL's and OCX's has always been a bit of a problem, and Leslie provides detailed code and recommendations on how to approach the subject. He suggests trapping the returned ERRORFILENAME from the Do(SELFREGPROC) function, loading it into a list, and then iterating through the list to see if any of the files are locked, and if so, create an entry in the RunOnce registry key, so that the update will occur at the next reboot. Far better then my prior approach of just displaying "Error in self-registration..." The book is loaded with hands on tips, very extensive coverage on creating new dialogs, and documents over 40 undocumented IS API calls! It is not just a rehash of the IS manual, but rather provides ideas and solutions on how to use the tool in real world situations. Leslie obviously speaks from experience, and this book will definitely advance your knowledge of IS coding techniques. -gary colson (Rational Software)
