Rating: Summary: Could be Better Review: I have been using this book in a classroom environment for 2 years and I do not recommend it to anyone at a beginner level. It has a wonderful reference card for MAC and Windows but many of the quickkeys do not work. It has a E Scale/Leading gauge transparency in the back of the book which was also a plus. I had many problems with the CDROMS being defective. The text and explanations in the chapters and excersises assume the user can retain quite a bit of information in a short period of time. The exercises utilize troubleshooting when a beginning user is still learning the basics. This can be very difficult for an introductory course. Instructions are also given for the Windows version. However the book's layout confuses the reader. Many of the extras on the CD are out of date for anyone who upgrades on a regular basis. I would definately recommend a new addition.
Rating: Summary: Good introduction to the software, but leave time for labs. Review: There has been a shortage of good QuarkXPress introduction books, and this is probably the best one out there. It talks you through all the necessary elements of the program. The only gripe I had about the book is that, unlike the Adobe Classroom in a Book Series, when it comes to the labs at the end, it's pretty much, "Make this." Although there are step-by-step examples in the text, it would have saved a lot of time if instructions were at the end also. There was also a lot of measuring that I had to do to place items. Otherwise, I recommend this book because it's got all you need.
