Rating: Summary: An Excellent Title for the game designer Review: A large, highly encompassing tome, this book covers an enormous amount of material. If you've ever wondered about some of the more fundamental pieces of game design, or never worked in a formal or high process development environment, this is the book for you.I can't say much else that has not already been mentioned in previous reviews, but I will re-iterate: BUY THIS BOOK!
Rating: Summary: Very Solid Stuff Review: The game design chapters are all very insightful, and generally accurate, with good anecdotes. Most of the rest of the book has a lot of normal business management/team management stuff, but its also vey well written, and highly relevant to game development studios. This is by far the best book on games and game design I've seen yet. Tom "Zileas" Cadwell Lead Designer Ethermoon Entertainment, inc.
Rating: Summary: One of a Kind Review: It is not often that a well-written book is published that focuses on all aspects of game development, and the ones that do usually do not allow enough space to go into detail. Game Architecture and Design, by Andrew Rollings and Dave Morris, breaks the mold. The book is well-written(aside from occasionally jumbled writing), and provokes one to think of the more important sides of the game industry. As an independent, freelance game designer, I found topics that are useful to both veterans of the game industry and newbies alike. Also, the CD-ROM contains some excellent software.
Rating: Summary: Getting it right Review: A programmer for 30 years I would rate this book with 4.7 stars. I liked the organization and the real-world experience it demonstrates. This is a very good book covering a wide range of topics and giving a good overview on design and architecture. I refer to the book frequently and it deserves more than one reading. The sections on software management are good and reflect the realities of game projects. The templates for game specs, the case studies, the inside scoop on game development, milestones, URLs, and development advice are only a few of the interesting and exciting assets covered in the book. It is a must buy. And required reading! I also liked all of Steve McConnells software books.
Rating: Summary: Must buy for game industry Review: This book does an excellent job covering game design, software engineering in games, and architecture for engines.
Rating: Summary: Should be required reading! Excellent Review: If you are involved in software development of any kind, you need to read this book. It is by far the most readable (and intelligent!) computer book I've ever come accross. The ideas on methodology and architecture are well thought out, well presented, and (interestingly enough) for the most part could apply to any type of software development. These are solid and proven business practices that the games industry is long overdue in adopting, with some fresh insights courtesy of the obviously knowledgeable authors and many practical (and often humorous) examples from the gaming world.
Rating: Summary: If Only All Technological Books Were This Great Review: This is a remarkable book on software design! This book is the perfect balance between the science of the software engineering process and the creative aspects of designing games. Whether you are a seasoned developer or someone trying to break into the business, this book will inspire you to think about design and architecture in new ways. Not only does this book contain valuable ideas on design, process, and architecture, but it is also an extremely well written book. I can't remember the last time I read a technical book cover-to-cover. The authors use real world examples to illustrate their points, and they interject just the right amount of humor to keep it entertaining. I highly recommend this book to anyone in the software industry, not just game designers.
Rating: Summary: Wow if only my manger read this! Review: Having read this book I have subtly placed it on my bosses desk, if he only implements half of the suggestions my life will be much easier! Not to mention the increase in productivity. Maybe I should start a new company based on the principles in this book..... I found the sections on game ideas, and converting ideas to a practicle solution invaluable. In fact I find the whole book invaluable. My question is why wasn't this written and taken note of 10 years ago, just imagine where the game world would be if it had! Read it!
Rating: Summary: Get this book! Review: This is a brilliant book on game design. I also bought Lewinski's "Developers guide to game design" but this blows that out of the water. Don't waste your time with any other book. If you're a beginer or an expert you *need* this book
Rating: Summary: Top quality stuff Review: This book is absolutely great stuff. I found a load of great ideas in here for tackling the mismanagement of our latest project. I'm a producer at a large US games publisher, and the advice in this book has proved invaluable. Maybe some of our games will start to come out on schedule and actually playable without patching.
