Rating: Summary: Still going strong after many years Review: I have owned this book now for at least 10 years. This is the book that taught me Shell programming in the first place. And it is as useful as ever. It reviews the basics, covers the Bourne shell and the Korn shell in simple step-by-step tutorials, and will help you through the minefield of syntax. And when you're finished with it, you'll always keep it on your shelf as a reference. Though I don't get my hands dirty nearly as often as what I used to, I always keep "Unix shell programming" handy, just in case.
Rating: Summary: Great bourne shell book Review: I have purchased this book several times. That is because I keep giving it away to friends. It is the best basic bourne shell programming book I've come accross in 10+ years of Unix admin. Most other books tend to focus on Ksh or Csh or some facsimile. This one I always keep at my desk for quick sh reference and fine examples.

Rating: Summary: Have taught and used this book for over 5 years. Review: I teach at a small college. My students have are inexperienced UNIX users. They love the book. The examples are understandable and helpfull. I use the book as a reference. I find it equally invaluable. It sits on my bookshelf and is used almost daily. Both myself and mystudents find this book invaluable for new learning and reference.
Rating: Summary: Good reference book on Unix Review: I used this book as a refresher and for reference. The book was one of the best that I could find on Unix. It didn't have much on permissions, perl or sed. But, overall it is a good book for you library.
Rating: Summary: Best shell scripting book in the world!! Review: If you are going to write a Unix script, chances are you will need this book. There is none better.
Rating: Summary: Give them shell Review: No book can be the end-all be-all in shell programming. But this one comes close. I used it to learn the basic understanding of Unix. Then keep it as a reference. I even buy new copies of it as it is revised. The on line man pages used to give examples that worked; however there are not enough or not at all on some commands. This book has also contains the why and concepts of Unix. It is better than those beginning to learn Unix books and rivals the pure reference manuals. Some people go to sleep in classes and others have comprehension problems with a bunch of words. This book has simple workable examples that help you get on with your work. For the speed you need and at a price you can afford, Unix shell Programming is what you are looking for.
Rating: Summary: Best beginning with Unix Book Review: The best beginning with Unix Book on the market period!
Rating: Summary: Very innaccurate examples Review: The syntax on most of the examples were wrong. The book is too vague on some important topics. What I really found annoying was the wrong examples. I had to play around with some of the commands to find out the correct syntax. Not a good book for beginners or experts. I would not recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Top Notch Shell Book Review: This and the Bruce Blinn book are the best books available on shell programming. Very thorough, well written, and well indexed. There are many usefull examples and no stupid fluff that is so pervasive in recent technical books.
