Summary: Not just another linux book.
Review: This book is a must have for the NT/2000 person who wants to know more about linux. Those of us with a solid background in NT are now able to leverage much of that knowledge to quickly get past many of the linux hurdles. This book has clear examples and will answer many questions in a way that you will understand. If you are curious about linux and know NT, do yourself a favor and buy this book first.

Summary: Excellent Book well worth the read, only one bad thing
Review: This book is excellent. I am a long time Windows NT/2000 programmer / administrator. This book helps in you learn linux in windoze terms.

He starts off with a very nice and informative history on Linux and unix. Then does a fairly decent job of describing open source and how linux can grow and flourish in this environment. I mean, as former M$ guy, I couldnt quite figure out how Linux could thrive and continue to make forward progress in the mehem that seemed to be open source, where any one ant anytime could modify the source and start their own distribution. He answers that question quite nicely.

He then gives a detailed overview of all Linuxes and which one might be best for you.

Bottom line--
This is an excellent started book, that will give any NT admin the basics of learning Linux. The only flaw? The material is dated, Redhat 7.2 is out and he discusses Redhat 6.2, the same with all the other linux distros he talkes about, they are all older versions. None of which has mattered so far, I just wish it was over the newer stuff, maybe he will come out with an updated version? Too, this is only a beginner Linux book, get this with the intention of getting a solid learning foundation in Linux, then you can look elsewhere for a comprehensive book on Linux. I suggest Wrox, they are the best learning books I have ever read.

Pros--
1) Concise
2) Covers all major versions
3) Does not overload you with Linux only speak
4) Explains linux in NT terms
5) Comes with Mandrake distro
6) Extremely converstional writing style very easy to read

Cons--
1) Covers dated material
2) A bit thin on setting up servers, could go into a bit more detail, and does not offer any trouble shooting tips when doing so
3) Ugly blue cover (heh, my opinion only :o)) )

Summary: Good Book!
Review: This book is great for those who know NT or 2000, but need some a little help or a jumpstart to learning Linux. It goes over basic stuff like comparing the lmhost file in windows to the hosts file in linux. It won't make you an expert, but it will get you going enough to make you confident when you go deeper into the "Linux world". For example he doesn't cover all command options that unix/linux offers but he does cover the most used and common options. He even tells you upfront. Advanced commands don't mean anything to a linux beginner anyway. The author explains things in simpler terms so you can pick it up - a must for learning technical things.

Summary: Simply Brilliant,
Review: This book is just brilliant. Im a Windows NT/2000 administrator and I wanted to get a grasp on Linux,I have looked at other books on Linux, but this book cuts out the waffle and explains it in terms I already know, saving me so much time.

The sections on DNS, Sendmail, Apache and Firewalls are just outstanding.

What I like in a book generally is that the Author should explain it to me like Im a two year old, which really fuels my interest and then load on the technical info, its re-inforced then and so much easier to apply, this book does just that The result - when you pick this book up, you just cannot put it down.

Buy this book you will not be dissapointed.

Summary: I loved the book!!
Review: This book shows you how to face the Linux world if you are an NT/2000 administrator who never used it. Minasi actually TALKS with the reader on each page, on his very human-style of writing. He keeps your attention, and makes it difficult to close the book. :} Very worth of buying, to get all the steps and to be introduced to Linux. This is not a complete reference , but a GREAT starting point! Congratulations MARK, you did it again.

Summary: Great for Win2k & WinNT people
Review: This is a great book! It's probably the 5th Linux related book that I have bought, however I wish it was the first.

I'm a WinNT & Win2k admin and have been into Linux\Unix as a user for over 10 years. I always got by on these systems by learning what I needed to do, but not learning the underlying principles. Now this is starting to hurt me as I begin to use Linux\Unix computers in a more advanced capacity and manage these computers and their services.

Minasi's book translates the windows concepts and commands that you already understand into Linux terms. This alone is worth the book if you're coming from the Windows world.
The book covers all the basic parts of Linux (installation, setup, GUI, shell commands & scripts, etc.) and other important topics (Apache, Samba, Sendmail, SMTP, DNS, DHCP, etc.).

This book is money well spent...

Summary: A Great Kick Start
Review: This is a GREAT kick start book for anyone who knows very little to nothing about Linux. It gets you up and running very quickly in a Linux environment, or even a mixed NT / Linux environment. I would suggest ordering a more advanced Linux book that is specific to your Linux needs though. I personally ordered this book and then the Redhat Bible to go into more depth of the specific Linux that I really needed to learn.
Overall, excellent book.

Summary: Good Linux Book From a Windows Guru
Review: This was a pretty decent overview of Linux. It contained a lot of information for it's size. Most of the examples were easy to follow as well as being very accurate. I LOVE Mr. Minasi's Windows NT and Windows 2K books. This book wasn't quite as good as those are, but it was a good attempt. I get the impression that Mr. Minasi isn't quite at home in Linux just yet. Other than that, I really enjoyed the book and I have accomplished a great deal of things with it. It served it's purpose well and I would recommend it to a technically literate person who is new to Linux.

Summary: Excellent for Win Admins wanting to learn Linux
Review: This was one of the first books I picked up when I decided to take the plunge into Linux. Being an MCSE and Windows administrator, I drastically improved my understanding of how Linux is similar, and differs from Windows. If you're a Windows guy or gal who wants to make sense of Linux, I highly recommend you pick up this book!
