Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Overly wordy and the example isn't all that enlightening.
Review: First of all, this book only covers JCA 1.0, which means in only discusses outgoing connections. Given that, the book is way too long.

More importantly, the example is overly complicated for what it does. And in the end, it doesn't even make a persistent connection to anything! To compound matters, the source code is incomplete, even when downloaded from the publisher.

A better starting point is "Applied Enterprise JavaBeans Technology" by Kevin Boone. He has a complete example that compiles and deploys--albeit non-pooled. The Apte example may be a useful source for some ideas on extending the Boone example to support pooling.
