Summary: Excellent general Java Book
Review: I used this book for two Java Classes and I highly recommend it. The book covers (well) the Java language, OOP, coding techniques and many other concepts like GUIs, Servlets, RMI, JDBC, Multimedia, etc. JSPs are not covered. It effectively uses Swing throughout most examples. The examples in the book are excellent and very very clear. The Servlets section was easier to follow than my dedicated Servlets book! Code is listed, then explained in depth, then the output is shown. Code snippets are reprinted as they are discussed so you don't need to page flip back and forth. The authors take extra space, color, highlighting to ensure their point gets across. They repeat points in a variety of ways and this works. I'm saying that the layout of the book is outstanding. The index is very good too. This book is a great intoduction to the Java world - I then bought separate books on Java Language Reference, JDBC, Servlets, and Swing. I wonder if the authors still plan to publish "Advanced Java How To Program"? I would probably buy it.

Summary: Java How to Program- 3rd Edition
Review: This book really works because of logic and repetition. It is organized in a very logical manner, and the concepts are repeated in different settings until it finally sinks in! The authors start with the 'big picture' of Java and then start filling in the pieces. I had struggled with a horrible Visual Basic book, and was pleased with what an 'easy read' this is. Every line of code is explained, and I never leave a chapter with unanswered questions. Great book for a beginner!

Summary: The Best Java Book for Beginners!
Review: Java is a serious language to learn, and this book gives a clear understanding of the fundamentals of Java. Those people who say it's not detailed enough, it is not true. First, this book is designed for beginners. Second, Java is not as easy as many people think it is. It takes a lot of time to understand the material. For those people who have a hard time understanding this book, then maybe you are not reading closely enough.

Summary: Best of the best
Review: Starting C++ with Deitel books I thought of no other place to go for Java. I was again impressed by the order of subjects and the ease with which they teach students of all levels. I would recommend no other book to learn Java from beginning to advanced level of study.

Summary: Great book for somebody who doesn't know Java at all
Review: First of all, this is a great book... Especially if you don't know any Java at all. I bought this book for a class, sat down and went through every example in the book, tweaking them each time to get a better understanding of each concept. 6 months later, I am now have my Sun Java Programmer certification. This book is FOR BEGINNERS. If you are looking for more complexity, then buy a book marketed for the specific type of aspect of Java you want to learn. This was the best starting point for me to move onto learning more advanced techniques. Of course it means spending a little more on books that are more specific to advanced topics, but hey, that's life. If you want to learn Java, then start here, read the chapters, actually WRITE THE EXAMPLES, COMPILE THEM, RUN THEM, AND TWEAK THEM. This is HOW YOU LEARN TO WRITE CODE. Don't whine if you want you don't want to write out the examples, because when I sat through my Computer Science 1-4 courses, everyday I heard "Go to the lab, enter the programs, and modify them". To sum up... Buy this book if you want to learn Java from scratch, then look more into the areas that interest you after you've finished with it.

P.S. - In two months I'll be going for my Sun Java Developer certification, which I never would have gotten to without this book.

Summary: Rough for beginners BUT the authoring company is responsive
Review: Short version: book doesnt integrate the free IDE's well but the author responded to my email for help immedietly.

Long version: I bought the book with self-training course for $100. I am an SQA engineer at a large company and needed to review JAVA material. I have 6 month experience programming and consider myself a novice. I bought this because it specifically states "For Beginners" on the back. I feel that this book is not for beginners. My biggest gripe is that they ship with free IDE's but then dont integrate them into the teaching and dont give you any help with them in the book! They only mention how to compile using the SDK and MS-DOS command prompt. The installer for the SDK that they ship with is missing a 'SET PATH' entry so you have to do it manually (this is mentioned a few pages into the ReadMe but it should also be in the book!) I was stuck on this so I emailed the author, he (or someone posing as him) responded immedietly with help.

Summary: A Nightmare!
Review: I've just finished a Java course and, because we used this book, I feel as if I've just been through a war. I'm so glad I never had to read this book again. I wish I could return it.

If you enjoy staying up until 5 am bouncing from internet chatroom to chatroom begging other Java programmers to help you with your homework because the book you're using is completely incoherent, then THIS is the book for YOU!

btw- NO info on EJB? The book states that if you want to learn about EJB you should visit a web site. And you're charging HOW MUCH for this book?

Totally unacceptable.

Summary: Poorly written, confusing for students
Review: I thought this was going to be as good as C How to Program, however this book was a big disappointment for me. Too many simple and useless examples, hard to get the point.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Average book, way too expensive!
Review: This Java How to program is an average book, compare to many other Java books. However, this book is about the twice the price of the other Java books. Why?

I would rate the book a 3 stars. However, when you consider the $68 tag, I think it only deserves a 2 stars.
