Summary: A very gentle introduction to JAVA
Review: It is not surprising that this is an excellent text because it is written by a college professor. I have an impression that the author has carefully chosen every word in presenting her ideas.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: An very good first step into java
Review: Java Gently explains how to program in java very clearly. The syntax is outlined in easy steps and thus Java Gently provides an excellent reference book for anyone interested in Java. If you're looking for something that will teach you how to program GUI's then look elsewhere as Java Gently's coverage of graphical programming is scant. Overall a very good book to start with if you're looking to program Java, but ultimately experienced programmers will find it limiting.

Summary: Great introduction to programming with Java
Review: Some books focus on narrow topics, like "applet programming" as if it were the be all end all of programming. This book takes a much broader view, and concentrates on programming first, and programming in Java specifically. It's the type of book you'll either love or loathe, depending on the type of programmer you want to be. If you just want to hack code, then by all means, try another book. But if you're new to programming, and want it done right - this is the book for you

Summary: Why do I have to give it a star ... Total waste of paper
Review: The book started out like it was going to be useful, but for not. When things get interesting, she introduces "her" library to make things easier. Unfortunately, this teaches you "java gently", not java. There is also no attempt to explain the GUI. Without the GUI, what is the point?

I recommend the "The Java Tutorial" instead. It covers pretty much everything you will need to get started.

Summary: good writing style, bad guidance
Review: The book uses a clear writing style. It is simple, concise and important things are highlighted. What I disliked very much is 1) the fact that I was mislead by the program examples. There are two editions of the book and also I bought the book in fall 1998 I got a outdated edition. The hyperlinks in this outdated edition link to the material and the examples of the current 2nd edition. I lost a lot of time until I found out about this. 2) There is no help on how to install a Java Development Environment and most important where to place the classes on which the example code in the book depends. So you need eather an other book about this facts or someone to help you installing all the tools you need in your computer.

Summary: Amazon is selling the outdated edition of this title!
Review: There is a Java 1.1 edition available. Please stock it and sell it, as people are going to be VERY annoyed at getting an outdated book! The ISBN for the new edition is 0-201-34297-9.Thanks.

Summary: badly written book
Review: This book is bad, and thats it. The author does not teach java but her own java gently class, that has errors. Most of the examples dont work, and for first year students it is a waste of money.Dont buy this book, get a free ebook on java or use the api from sun.

Summary: A good book for academics
Review: This book is very good for those who have not met with Java before. It's aim is not only to make us able to write Java programs, but also to _understand_ how and why things are as they are in Java.

There are certain weaknesses, but the overall impression I get from this book is very good.

Summary: i do not recommend this book
Review: THis book was absolutly awful. It did not explain how to actually program. It was also bad in the writing where she just did not explain her thoughts to the full extent

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: This book is really hard to follow up on
Review: This book was really hard to follow up on. Although it had some easy to understand definition, the examples provided were really hard to follow. I didn't learn to much from this book. I had to move on to another book just to get a clear understanding of definitions and concepts in java programming.
