Summary: An excellent book for learning MFC but...
Review: ...but, there is a problem with the code examples. The very first code example on page 22 will compile but not link. I am using MS VC++ 6.0 just as the author suggests. To get it to link I had to add /MT to Project Options under Project Settings (ALT-F7). Also, the author did not make it clear HOW to create resources without using the resource wizard. Its a little clumsy but I figured it out.

Aside from these minor difficulties this is a very good book. It really gives you a good feel for what is going on in an MFC program and a good chunk of the intimidation one feels when first looking at an MFC program disappears.

It would help if the author provided the "wizard" version of the code and the steps needed to provide the "wizard" version.

Summary: Good book for beginners
Review: A good book for beginners. I bought the book when I was first learning MFC, and it proved to be helpful. I still occasionally go back to the book, looking for help when needed. However once you have the fundamentals of MFC, you will most likely move on to more advanced books, and MSDN for all your answers.

Summary: If you are fairly new to MFC, this is the best way to learn
Review: After being away from GUI development for 3 years, I was faced with MFC 4. Since a lot of things had changed since MFC 2, I bought the book on the "Ground Up" promise. The book REALLY delivers. It takes you methodically through the major aspects of UI development, and the relationship of the MFC classes to the Windows UI elements. This book isn't and end-all-be-all to MFC programming, but it IS one of the best intros around.

Summary: Excellent beginner's introduction to MFC
Review: An excellent introduction to MFC. You learn by coding _without_ using the Visual Studio appwizard.

Summary: Excellent introduction to MFC Programming
Review: As many of the other reviews point out, this book teaches you how to write MFC applications without the damn wizard. Most books, actually all of the books on MFC, besides Jeff Prosie's, I've seen use the wizard approach Microsoft pushes. If you want to learn MFC programming you NEED to get this book or Prosie's. I have not met a professional MFC programmer that uses the wizards. As Schildt points out in his book, you end up fighting the code generated by the wizard, not benefitting from it.

Summary: Baby steps maybe a little too small?
Review: Great book for many compilers, I'm sure, but since Visual C++does SO MUCH for you, there's no need to spend 150 pages looking atcontrols and dialog layout when you can insert them w/ V C++ in a cut and paste environment in 2 minutes. But it was still interesting from a theoretical point of view. It's a good beginning, nevertheless, to MFC. It doesn't take you too far into the classes, which was frustrating; it covers only the simplest and most common tools. If that's what you're looking for, this is the book for you....the only question now is: what's a good follow-up text? Any suggestions??

Summary: good introduction. but just scratch the surface,
Review: herbert really gave me nice introduction. if IQ is normal, no people will feel difficult to get through it. that is fine.

But it is too easy. it just touch the surface. it just touch the tiny tip of mfc huge iceberg. And he repeated the same code snippets over and over. I am wondering if Mr. herbert got fed up with writing this code snippets. sorry to make this kind comment! Anyway it is overall good. But you got to pick up another book like jeff prosise to dive

Summary: A really good book for MFC beginners.
Review: I am familar with C and C++, but had no experience with MFC or Windows programming. I started with books like "Using Visual C++" that made me feel that I learned nothing except some simple step-by-step operations of using Wizards. This book did lead me into the door of understanding the workings of MFC. A REALLY GOOD BOOK FOR ME. A PERFECT STARTING POINT.

Summary: Well Rounded Updated MFC Book
Review: I bought 3 MFC books looking for answers to specific questions for all kinds of areas necessary for a complete software product. The only book that I found them in was here!
