Summary: Useless for the exam
Review: As a tool to prepare for the W2K workstation test, this book is a flop. Okay basic knowledge for introduction. Be sure to read the resource kit, if passing the test is your main goal.

Summary: Lost a star for having no CD
Review: As MOC books go, I thought this one was excellent. A good even read with no surprises. Which can only be a blessing for anyone at any stage of their studies or certification.

In depth enough for a desktop user, and a light introduction for others on the W2K MCSE track. With the heavy stuff in the Server book, where it should be.

Although there are many chapters in the Professional book, they are short and make you feel as though you are achieving your objectives quickly.

Well done Microsoft, lessons well learned from the NT4 MOC books. The standards and pace remain consistent throughout the first batch of released W2k range of material.

So take my advice and do yourself a favour, don't cheapskate it and buy a book that will eventually be sold for £3 in two years time. Save yourself time, money and effort, GET THIS BOOK!

Summary: Decent book but rushed to market
Review: Hello Fellow Travellers!

I have been using Win2k Pro/Server from beta to final release. I went through the classes for win2k based on beta3. I purchased all the pro/server/ad MCSE training kits. I wanted to get clarification and separation from the win2k classes via the MCSE books. I work with Win2k Pro everyday.

I have been using the training kits ever since I started on this never-ending journey of studying I found the MCSE win2kpro training kit material to be quite good and clear. This books covers ALOT of material and addresses good common issues/ questions about win2k pro.Overall, it is pretty good book. Ok, why the 3 stars?

The material is fine, but I think that this book is more addressed to different audience. If you are a newbie trying to start out, this book might be overwhelming. I think that this is more addressed to people who have taken/have a couple MCPs or classes.

Another reason is that this book does not have a eval copy of win2k pro which I find quite irritating! They suggest that you d/l a copy from their website! Boggle. I have full versions of the OS, but for someone who doesn't...not pretty. I feel that this book was somewhat rushed to market and didnt have time to put in the RTM with the book. OR..they decided that this book is for a higher audience. I am confused about this move. When I check the MS site, I thought the 0 CD contained in the book was a typo. Guess not.

Conclusion: (why didn't start from here? :)) Good material and info. Bad marketing..no eval copy. Confusion. You need a running version of Win2k Pro to even use this book. If you have a copy of win2kpro, get it. If not, try to get hard copy of win2k pro, I guarantee that you will install/reinstall over time.

My 2 cents,

Summary: Not enough to make a nice score
Review: Hello,

I also read this training kit and took the exam. I do find that the book is well written and contains a lot of usefull information... but it isn't enough to pass the exam. I got a lot of questions about subjects that weren't covered in the book. Luke me... i passed with a score of 660 (620 was needed). I really hate Microsoft Exams very long questions etc. I've done a lot of Novell exams and they are much better. Also the Novell books did cover everything for the exam. I give this book 2 stars because it just doesn't cover every objective you need to pass the exam.

This book is not for people like me who want to know everything and make a big score on the exam.

Greetings,

A dude from Veenendaal, The Netherlands.

Summary: You'll need more than this book...
Review: How an MS Press book could be published and miss some of the "Skills Being Measured" is beyond me. If you're going to publish a book for your own friggin' software, do it right.

It doesn't even get into using Remote Installation Services or using SysPrep. WTF?!?!? I felt like I got more info and hands-on reading Sybex's MCSE Windows 2000 Professional Study Guide.

I also bought the Academic Learning Series version of this book, hoping it would have more information, new information, or something different. It's no different than this book, except the cover.

I'm debating whether or not I'll ever buy another MS Press book.

Summary: The Microsoft Mafia in Action
Review: I bought this book ($60 retail),read it from cover-to-cover, and worked through every practice exercise on real hardware. I then took the practice tests which I bought from MeasureUp (a Microsoft flunky corporation -- cost: $100 for 150 questions). The bottom line is that this book will only prepare you for about 50% of the practice questions, which presumably reflect the real test as well. There is A LOT of material simply not covered in this book, or not covered in nearly enough detail to pass the test. The MS Professional Resource Kit is mandatory as is a lot of digging on the MS Web site. In my opinion the book was a letdown and failed to provide a comprehensive set of materials to prepare for the test. This is unlike, for instance, the many A+ series books that abound (and other certification guides). Microsoft seems to be intent on putting us through a fair amount of hell and expense in getting the Windows 2000 MCSE. I suspect their real goal, by making self study so expensive (scattering the required study materials into varied publications and making misleading claims about the Training Kit Series) is to force us all into their corporate approved test centers. I had a fairly high estimation of Microsoft before getting into this mess, now I think Janet Reno and company may just have the solution we need to deal with these guys.

Summary: Excelent to pass the exam
Review: I bought this book with the only reason to pass the Microsoft exam, but is not the best book to learn all about this Operating System.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: MSCE Professional
Review: I feel the practices within this book should be separate and should include a Training CD ROM emphasizing them so it would not be necessary to buy an upgrade or full version of the software to work along with the book.
