Rating: Summary: This book will not teach how to administer a 2000 web server Review: First off, the book is dated. IIS 5 is now out, and IIS 4 is a couple years old. Although 5 doesn't differ much from 4, Windows NT does differ from 2000. In addition some of the ASP coding is a little dated (especially, since MS new .NET framework).Secondly, the book never really takes you step by step on what you have to do to set up a web site. It doesn't go through important things like setting up DNS or DNS strategies. Also left out is anything regarding receiving email (of course that another MS product and another MS book). I guess the book does live up to being a book about IIS 4 -- and only IIS 4. Why the book has to be nearly 600 words about just IIS is beyond me? Thirdly, some of the resources and tools are just plain useless. I mean who the heck uses the built in traffic analysis? There many programs out there that provide better detailed reporting. Finally, the really potentially useful information, such as interacting with IIS through VB and ASP, is glossed over. The author, I suppose, figures that you'll learn how to do it on your own. I bought this book hoping to brush up on skills and maybe pick up on better methods of how to run a MS web server, but this book did not deliver. If you want a book that is overly verbose and can put you to sleep this is it, but if you want to learn how to run a MS web server don't waste your money.
Rating: Summary: This is the good one Review: I have read a few of the Resource Kits now, (NT Workstation, NT Server ) and this is by far the best one. The NT Resource Kits left me wanting for more concise information, and a better read (less verbose) but this book gives a concise and yet complete reference of IIS 4.0
Rating: Summary: Useful information and CD, but, needs to be updated. Review: If you are an aspiring MCP this is a very good addition to your bookshelf of study material. The book is full of information not adequately covered in the official curriculum and sure to be on the certification test. This is not a replacement for a real study guide nor is it a complete "How To" manual, but don't mistake it for casual reading either. The two CD's included are worth the price of the book, especially if you are an administrator (or an aspiring administrator). The single biggest drawback is Microsoft't use of its own corporate solutions. We all know how big Microsoft is, so give us a break: spotlight someone else using IIS!
Rating: Summary: It's like watching Independence Day without the SFX Review: It just scratches the surface of the vast features of IIS4. Doesn't go into detail, doesn't have how-to guides, doesn't serve its purpose.
Rating: Summary: This book misses the mark Review: The information in this book can be found in many other sources. Information relating to its title is not covered and the program interface is never discussed. This book gives general information about many internet site development topics but never gets into the "meat" of IIS 4.0. I immediately returned the book and will search for better information resources. Steer clear of this title.
Rating: Summary: If you are an IIS 4.0 Admin, this is a must have! Review: This was the most useful book I had in my collection when I was an IIS 4.0 administrator. This is a must have for any IIS 4.0 admin, absolutly the best book on this subject.
