Summary: A Hacker Guide?
Review: This book is a nice read if you are interested in security. Under no circumstances should this book be used as a hacker "guide." People think that just because a book is titled "Hacking Exposed" it will be an in-depth guide on how to use techniques to infiltrate systems. This book is nothing more than a primer on security and scratches the surface of how attacks on networks are accomplished, not a step-by-step guide on how to complete those attacks. Don't judge a book by it's cover, especially this one.

Summary: Nothing new, try the L0pht
Review: I bought the book yesterday and promptly returned it today. The reason is very simple, what is covered in the book can be found repeatedly on security sites and hacker sites. Also, I found the lack of explainations on exactly why each hack works is very disturbing. If you want to protect your system it's best to understand the ENTIRE sitituation before trying to solve the problem using shortcut methods described in the book. Rather, read the full documentation of each hack and understand what exactly it is your dealing with. This way not only will you fix the holes now but will be prepared from any future hacker attempts.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Useful for today's Newbies
Review: Covered material well. Not deep enough to be useful to the secret crowd, but not too deep for someone thrown into a security position that is over their head. More ink spent on some low level stuff that you already know if you picked this book, but it is WELL worth the price to NOT have to cut and paste the info from resources all over the web. For a published writing on the subject it is thourough. Crackin' for Christ.

Summary: Expsoure is a good thing.
Review: An excellent book for the complete novice. Covers basic concepts and methods in a professional manner that is easy to follow as well as being informative. The only downside to the book is how outdated it becomes in a short amount of time, don't be tricked into thinking that this book will get you into a machine just by following the instructions. The authors are very system administrator friendly and explains the vulnerabilities as well as the ways to patch your system against them.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Pretty good overview of security vulnerabilities
Review: I think this book does a fairly good job of educating those who consider themselves to be beginners or medium-level security people. The book is easy to read, but it is clearly focused on Microsoft products, and doesn't say much about 'advanced' hacking. For those who want to learn how to 'hack', this is a dream come true.

Summary: Amazing Book! Definate 5 Star!
Review: I wish I would have found the book sooner in a lot of cases then having to go through all the "Hackers" sites cause they are just cluttered. This book is great and everything is layed out for even the most under educated in this field a definate buy for anyone worried about the security of you computer and if you not worried about the security of your computer this book will make you worried.

Summary: It Hacks it
Review: Hacking exposed is one of the best books that I have come across. It is good for network administrators and new hackers alike. Hacking exposed takes you from the beginning to the end of a hack. It shows you how to catch the hacker, and it shows the hacker how not to get caught. I highly recommend this book if you have a network or are interested in network security.

Summary: Excellent place to start
Review: I have long been a hacker of the benign sort, as well as a senior corporate systems manager. When Internet hacking/cracking started to become a serious concern, I decided I needed to educate myself on the subject rather than continue to rely on my staff and consultants.

This book did an excellent job getting me started. You have to come into it knowing what traceroute means, but given that, the book's "it takes a thief to catch a thief" approach does the trick.

I recommend that every CIO in the world read this book. Or else.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A wakeup call for your management
Review: Excellent book - I would say it's the best of its kind. It may become dated rather quickly, so hopefully they'll update it as needed. The negative reviews I've seen for this book appear to be motivated solely by the competitive egos of those who would preserve the hacking "priesthood".

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: a not bad reference book for computer security auditor
Review: Do not expect too much form the book if you wanna to be a hacker, however, if you are trying build a basis understanding about how your I.S should be audited. The book is worth of reading.
