Summary: Nortel Networks the Complete Reference
Review: This book was first conceived while I was working in the Nortel Networks Technical Solutions Center (TSC) in Billerica, MA (I have since moved on to System Test Engineering); after dealing with so many issues and answering so many questions, it seemed to me that there were some common points of confusion. It also seemed that, given a quick explaination, these points were quickly understood by most people...they just didn't know where to find the information. I got requests from many customers asking if there were any other references for a variety of protocols such as PNNI (I'd get a lot of questions about that one), OSPF, Layer 3 switching, etc., and although there were references available, I couldn't point them to anything Nortel-specific. So, I decided to write one that not only explained many of these protocols, but also how to configure and troubleshoot them on Nortel's equipment specifically.

In coming up with a book for the 'Complete Reference' series, I thought seriously about what would be included; even a large technical manual is bound (no pun intended) by a certain number of pages (a boundary I believe we pushed, exceeding the original estimation by almost 200 pages), and I very much wanted to include information which would benefit the largest number of Nortel customers. My goal was to give a two-fold study of each topic, covering the theory of each protocol and technology, as well as its specific implementation on Nortel's equipment. This includes legacy protocols such as OSPF, RIP, and Source Route Bridging, as well as ATM and its related protocols such as IISP, PNNI, and MPOA; after a good deal of effort, and all the help from the great people at Nortel and Osborne, I believe we have succeeded and that this book will be a great help to a lot of people.

Please feel free to email me with your feedback; I believe customer input is invaluable to a project such as this, and I am committed to making this reference the best, and most helpful, it can be.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Good for beginners and experts
Review: We use this huge reference within our company... and we don't even use Nortel equipment! Our company deals with network design issues daily, and the first few chapters make a great study guide for new-hires who are trying to grasp the whole spectrum of networking technology at once. The rest of the book quickly delves into specifics that benefit the more advanced reader... overall, this book was a great buy!
