Rating: Summary: Unbeatable Intro to Flash Review: This is one of the best introductory books on using a software program that I've ever read. The authors not only tell you how to use Flash, they also tell you what to do with it -- how to "think Flash." That's the part that most manuals and how to books leave out. Even though I know Director, I could have spent a lot of time playing around with Flash before I could ever have gotten this far on my own. Thanks guys.
Rating: Summary: Learn Flash 5? Look no further!! Review: As a relative newcomer to Macromedia Products and charged with creating a commercial web site, I was quite daunted having seen the flash work area and interface. This book allays all your fears and helps you to build a comprehensive and clear understanding of this wonderful web animation program. By arranging tutorials through out you learn all the basics, from here, you build on this, develop and gain confidence allowing your sense of creativity to flourish. In my experience, there are very few computer books that guide you through the learning process and make it enjoyable. To the authors WELL DONE!! I look forward to reading and learning from Foundation Actionscript.
Rating: Summary: Very shallow introduction Review: Actionscript may surprise many a programmers; it is not a shallow programming language and with foundations in ECMAScript and a deep arsenal of tools, it poses a very steep learning curve. What this book attempts to do is sugar-coat by example; you do things - you copy the code, you mess around with it, but after you are done with the book you know you need so much more. Hand holding is nice, but effectiveness is important too. Skip this one.
Rating: Summary: Learn the basics and get your 1st Flash-site online! Review: Step by step, you'll learn everything you need to know to get a nice-looking Flash-site done, even some basic scripting. All you need to get you started.
Rating: Summary: Well writen but could be more complete Review: Overall it's a good book. I would recommend it as a second reference. My biggest concern with this mild review is the Index. It sould have been more complete. Take for example: try to search HTML in this index... nothing. XML? no. "le"? (less than or equal to - string specific) You wont find it ind the Index.
Rating: Summary: Foundation Flash 5 Review: This book is helpful. I've had other technology "how to" books that were more helpful though. I use the index frequently, and it seemed not to have several topics for which I was searching.
Rating: Summary: Excelent Review: Excelent book. If your're patient, and follow the step by step, you'll finish these fantastic book making your own projects. The language is very simple and direct. Congratulations to FriendsofED.
Rating: Summary: One of the Best Values that I have Ever Encountered. Review: Prior to reading Foundation Flash I had read at least three other Flash titles that were completely inadequate. They were either too advanced or too vague. I didn't get the feeling that I was building a true foundation in my quest to master Flash 5 until I found this book. After reading this book and going through the exercises, "now I get it." It could have used a CD, but other than that, I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: From a programmer's point of view.... Review: This is a great introductory tutorial on how to use Flash 5. Covers most of the essential and cool features in plain language that most people should be able to comprehend. Not a book for those upgrading from Flash 4 or for intermediate or advanced Flash 5 users. The step by step instructions are clear with plentiful illustrations and mostly error-free. This book also introduces the user to ActionScript, which is what makes Flash 5 so powerful. Just to reiterate, this book is a tutorial, not a reference.
Rating: Summary: Finally, a good book on Flash Review: It is hard to distinguish good books from bad if you don't know anything about a product. I was starting to think there weren't any good books on Flash until I found this one. I think the high ratings on all the other books I've found to be so awful must be written by the friends, cousins and grandmothers of the authors. In any case, after wasting a lot of money on Flash books that have all sorts of errors and omissions in them, I've finally discovered this one. It really is the best. (And I don't know the author from Adam.)
