Rating: Summary: First rate entry level HTML primer Review: Laura Lemay has become one of the premier writers of web development texts, and this book is a good example. Many entry level texts get you started using code that has been depricated by the W3C, knowing full well that future browsers may not support the coding methods they are teaching. Laura does an excellent job of introducing newcomers to the "art" of web development while at the same time, prepares them for impending changes in the coding standards. The basics are well covered with easy to understand examples. Advanced techniques are introduced in such a way as not to confuse the novice. While the book does not come with a CD rom with sample code, most books this size are considerably more expensive. In my opinion, the trade off was well worth it. This book is an absolute must have for the novice who is serious about learning HTML.
Rating: Summary: Great Basic Reference Book Review: Laura Lemay is a wonderful writer. I found her book to be a great starting place for beginners. As I have mastered the basics, additional recources are needed- Lemay doesn't cover the more advanced topics in depth and some are not covered at all. Many useful html tools are not mentioned in her book. But, for beginners, this is a great book to start with!
Rating: Summary: Covers too much with too little detail! Review: Overall I would not recommend this book. The main reason is that it attempts to cover everything and instead gives a once over lightly treatment of very complex topics like java, CGI and JavaScript. Even the treatment of simpler topics like style sheets and forms is inadequate. I would highly recommend to beginners that they purchase separate books (starting with HTML) that cover these topics in detail and can act as references. This book is not a good reference in that it just scratches the surface. I'm sure this whole "21 day" thing helps sell books but is unrealistic. You probably could teach yourself Web publishing in 21 days but you would have to shell out a lot more money for books!
Rating: Summary: where are the files? Review: Overall, this book is great. I found it well written and easy to understand and follow. The only complaint that I have, was locating all of the files for each lesson. I find this very confusing from a beginner's stand point. The beginning of the book gives a website to download the source files. But it is for an older edition. The CD that accompanies the book does not contain everything do each lesson. ALot of guessing to fiqure what files they are using for each lesson.
Rating: Summary: Student Review: Probably one of the most comprehensive books for the beginner. I purchased this book with no knowledge of HTML or any programming language for that matter. I had no prior computer training but I was able to grasp HTML 4.0 with ease which says a lot about how well thought out the lessons are. For the beginner this is definitely the best I've seen in circulation. Try any of the other Sam's books and you will definitely get the same experience.
Rating: Summary: A Good HTML Reference with a Few Exceptions Review: Provides a good overview to web page development using HTML 4. Some issues with the book, however: a number of sections were written before specifications were firmed up and although this is noted in the book, they still cloud its value. Some of the links referring to additional information within the book also no longer function. Finally, the HTML reference was printed to conserve space rather than to enhanced readability - making it very hard to read. Should have been split up into one page per major item rather than letting one topic spill onto the page of another. But covers all of the major topics involved in web page publishing - so is a good starting point for serious beginners.

Rating: Summary: This book saved me............. Review: Studying graphic design, I thought that a job designing web pages was going to be easy. So I took a job doing just that. However, I had no clue what I was doing. I freaked out, and picked this book up immediatly. In just a few short days all my questions were answered. Now, thanks to this book, I am pursuing more aspects of web design. I highly recommend this book for anyone, to use as a reference, or to get you started (its perfect for the beginner, I was a prime example). Good luck, and have fun..........
Rating: Summary: Taught me how to make a web page, easily. Review: The book was recomended by a friend, it covers enough informatiom to make and publish a web page. I knew nothing about it before I read the book. The book will stay in my reference library forever.
Rating: Summary: The best guide keeps getting better Review: This book has too much common sense! Anyone serious about HTML should get this. Geared to the interested beginner, it is helpful to intermediate/advanced who want to be up to date on the latest HTML specs.
