Summary: Core book from a high level
Review: This book is a good high-level book to understand primary concepts of jsp development and proper architecture design. The code isn't as tight as it should be, but the core concept is there. Although, I'm glad I have this book I would suggest just sitting down with a coffee and scanning it in a bookstore; you'll experience the same effect. I'm going to purchase Web Development with Java Server Pages (ISBN: 1884777996) and Core Servlets and Java Server Pages (ISBN: 0130893404) next.

If you're bloody new, pick this one up. If you have had any experience at all, I would steer clear from this book.

Summary: Joke
Review: This book is a joke. They don't show anythink new that isn't already being published. Even the hard to follow sun tutorial is better than this book. My first disappointment with Oreilly. I'm trying to return the book and get my money back as we speak. For all you newbies. I would go with Professional JSP by WROX..

Summary: A great book to learn JSP
Review: This book is by far the best book to JSP - the latest version. It gave me some ideas. This book is loaded with useful code. This book is great for two kinds of programmer: a beginner and for the experienced developer. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to learn JSP.

Summary: Well written, good examples
Review: This book is very well written, and doesn't bore you with overblown, unrealistic, and hard to follow examples. Obviously some background in Java is needed, the short primer in the book will be over anybody's head that hasn't had any previous exposure to Java. Perfect starter if you want to get into Server Side Java progamming, makes you hungry for more.

Summary: Well Done
Review: This book not only covers JSP syntax and techniques, but also adds a lot of value with its discussion of web application architecture. In other words, the author does a good job of showing how JSP should fit into an overall application design.

The author's writing style is clear and effective and the examples are generally very good. One minor criticism is that the author uses a lot of his own custom JSP tags in examples throughout the book and I felt that this hid the details of what is really going on in some cases. The book also includes a useful reference section at the end.

Summary: Excellent Book!
Review: This book really gets you up to speed with JSP / JSTL! Clear information on the concepts and the background, lot's of real world examples that allow you to build your own application faster than you ever thought.

Summary: Not really for beginners
Review: This is a good book, but it took me a little time to get used to all the JavaBeans. This was a little hard for a beginner on a deadline. I had to buy 2 other books to compliment this book. JSP-Your Visual Blueprint and JavaServer Pages Fast and Easy Web Development. These are both visual books.

Summary: Great Book
Review: This is a great book: it was written by a key contributor not only to the JSP specification, but also to the JSP and Servlet reference implementations. Filled with useful examples, it stands as an important text in the adoption of JSP in the market.

Summary: Disappointed from O'Reilly
Review: This is a very disappointed book. Chapter 14 sais "If you haven't worked with servlets, I recommend that you read up on them ( try Jason Huneter and William Carwford's Java Servlet Programming..." This chapter is for Servlets. In the beginning of chapter 17 sais "I recommend that you look at the JDBC documentation on line at ... or read a book about JDBC, such George Reese's Database Programming with JDBC and Java." This chapter is for developing databases. The chapter 15 "Developing JavaBeans for JSP" does't explain how to compile the beans nor how to install them. The first 12 chapters are not for programmers they are for page authors (but I don't thing a page author that uses dreamweaver and flash can understand this section), and the chapters from the 13th to the 17th that are supposed to be for programmers sugest you should read other books. Now I have to buy another book if I really want to lern about JSP's. I do not recomend this book.
