Rating: Summary: Not very good at all.........returned it 3 days after... Review: I am not questioning the authors knowledge of the subject. He seems to know a great deal about flash and actionscript. Unfortunately, knowledge does not always equate with clear concise writing and instruction. I am a software engineer, and have used javascript for random web projects. This book, and it's content confused me. Mainly because of the layout/lessons he uses. Either the book would move dreadfully slow, or the examples he uses were not explained well. Overall, I was really disappointed....
Rating: Summary: THE ActionScript book for Artists... Review: I have several books on ActionScript and have scimmed through many more, but this is by far the best book I have come across TEACHING actionscript. Granted, if someone is experienced in javascript or flash 4 actionscript this book probably seems like its geared for idiots. However, if you're like me and a graphic designer first and a programmer second, this is the book for you. The author does an excellent job of taking you by the hand, giving tutorials, and explaining what does what every step of the way. By the end of each chapter you realize you just learned a few cool new tricks that will be very useful in web design. This is not a referrence book, its more of a tutorial book. Which means if you're not very creative it probably won't do you any good. If you're an artist though you can take the fundamentals you've learned and then apply them in new and creative ways. Bottom line: if you're a graphic designer who's intimidated by all that computer programming mumbo jumbo, but you still would like to learn how to extend your capabilities in Flash...buy this book. Plus, at $... you can't find a better bargain on a computer book with this much info.
Rating: Summary: Excellent introduction Review: I loved the book, read it like a good novell from cover to cover. It's dogeared all over now, post-its stickin' out every ten pages or so, and I feel I'm ready to get something coool online soon! Sure, you don't get all the details (that what I bought Moocks reference book for anyway...), but the title says "Foundation", so that's ok; some nice examples to build upon and all the code online to download (why not on a cd though?), so what more could you want?
Rating: Summary: ActionScript for whom? Review: I will reiterate that this isn't 100% foundation material. If you can't figure out how to do a button from looking at the buttons that come with Flash, don't even bother at all. And, there are hundreds of Flash sites that will let you download and appropriate code. What I was expecting was the book to feel the same as Foundation Flash 5. I went through that one from cover to cover and basically cemented my knowledge of all of the functionality of flash. This book leaves large gaps in palpable design. My main gripe is that the majority of the scripting examples are actually downloaded from the site and then looked through. In Foundation Flash 5, *EVERY* bit of code was worked through from beginning to end by the user. This may seem tedious, but the best way of remembering how to make symbols and graphic elements and discern the two and learn how to place them is by doing it over and over and over. In this book, its like: "ok, now look at the array I set up. See? There it is. Now you know how to do arrays." Yes, I had seen arrays before, and I could have simply downloaded script sans your book to learn "everything" about everything. But I was looking for a book that would walk me through the utilization of, no matter how rudimentary, each component of actionscript - step by step. I don't care if it is a 2 step exercise on how to initialize arrays, it would have been more than this offered. And yes, you will still need an Actionscript reference encyclopedia as this, nor the flash 5 standard, suffice in terms of providing proper detail of syntax. Sorely disappointed, at that in between level where I know of most of the functionality, but am always reaching for a book for how to use it.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: I work in the Medical field and wanted to learn actionscript for programming in flash and make presentations that I use to teach my students. What I am trying to say is that if you want to learn Actionscript and if you are from any field other than infotech or computer sciences and if your programming skills are low this is the best choice. And as you see the name suggests that this book is for learning "programming in flash" to add complex interactivity to your movies and not for learning how to design using flash or things like making buttons and so on. If you want to learn more about designing in flash there are hundreds of books out there to help you but none of them will explain to you the innards of Actionscript like this book.
Rating: Summary: Nice try, but... Review: I would only recommend this book if you already know enough scripting (JavaScript, etc.) to correct the numerous errors in the code examples. All of the "friends of ED" books that I have seen have too many errors to be taken seriously. They are usually the first to publish books on certain topics but the overall quality is very poor. Look elsewhere and save yourself some wasted time!
Rating: Summary: finally, an actionscript book written for artists! Review: i'm very impressed, to say the least... i've been looking for a decent actionscriping book, written for the creative, artistic types, and this is it! the author moves at the perfect speed--the book assumes a decent knowledge of flash and doesn't bore the advanced user with the basics, but yet assumes little to no programming knowledge. perfect!
Rating: Summary: Coding tutor Review: I've read some other book on the argument but this is probably the best action-script book written. That because is write very easy but very efficient in reach the core of the concepts. It builds solid foudamentals in scripting and it's easy to follow. So, if you have no experience in coding like me, your skill reach an intermediate level by the end of the book in very short time and now I feel able to start some good projects in Flash 5 without any fear to be not-enough-good for it
