Summary: I must really be a Dummy
Review: I'm new to SQL/SQL Server, and was looking for a basic intro to the package. The book does an excellent job introducing all of the features and functions, but not much else. Real-world examples were there, but very limited. As I read, I often found myself asking, in a manner of speaking, "sure, that's what button I push, but WHY do I push it?"

I did walk away with an appreciation for the complexity of SQL Server 7. Save yourself the cash, and read the product documentation instead.

Summary: a very good book for sql7 beginner
Review: I've used Access 97 for 2 years now and I want to upsize to SQL7. This book offers me the basic overview nearly all aspects of the product.

Summary: Happy in Houston
Review: Not only did Amazon get me the book about 4 days ahead of schedule, but the book turns out to be fairly accurate and useful. I usually don't admit to having a 'Dummies' library, but this one will go on my shelf at work. The flowcharts in the back were really helpful... just not enough of them :)

Summary: GREAT BOOK
Review: This bok is Great for some'one first book about sql server. A must have!!!

Summary: Good startingpoint
Review: This book freshened me up on relational databases, which is essential for understanding sql7. after this book you can just use a cram-book for preparing for the 70-128 exam (NOT the exam cram for administering sql7 from coriolis! ) unless you need a studyguide with hands-on labs. i didnt find it to be a problem that this book is written on beta3, if you cant sort it out because of that then you have an attitudepreoblem or you are a spoiled kid. if so, ask mommy for help with your sql-studies.

I learned advanced Access in a different language than english and this book helped me with some of the english DB-terminology. Im taking the test next week, my 7th MS-test, this book has saved me for weeks of studytime by pointing out the basic direction right from the begining.

Summary: SQL 7.0 BETA for dummies
Review: This book is obviously written on the author's work on the Beta version of SQL 7.0. Unfortunately Microsoft has changed several things from the beta to the final release, which makes this book a poor buy. At least if you were planning on leaning how to install a SQL server, then your money is absolutely wasted...

Summary: Excellent starting place!!!
Review: While this book maybe less than what a seasoned DBA maybe looking for it is non the less an excellent book. The author wrote the book using Beta 3 and I used it against RC-1 of SQL 7. There were some differences but not enough to interfere with the authors clear introduction to SQL 7.

I believe you will find SQL Server 7 for Dummies to be a superb introduction to SQL 7 and as only one of two books on the subject in print at the time of this review it is the least expensive and most informative.

Summary: Weak, very weak
Review: Whilst this book is a good start for a person who knows all but nothing about SQL, it only touches the surface. By no means use this as your only book. If you know a little bit about SQL, then steer clear. Otherwise, use it as a stepping stone, but be prepared to spend more on other titles.

Summary: Good for getting your feet wet...
Review: With a lot of experience in desktop databases (Access, Fox Pro) and SQL, and a desire to get up to speed with MS-SQL 7.0, I found this book was a great starting point.

By no means will it make you a DBA, but it will give you a general overview of MS-SQL 7.0. It will walk you thru some, but not all, of the Wizards, and other features available in the MS-SQL 7.0 Enterprise Manager. Which, for people considering this book probably don't know, is the place where you do all your stuff (create databases, tables, manage users, etc.).

This book does not show you how to ~program~ against an MS-SQL server. It doesn't even show you how to set up a client to access the server, which was a disappointment. But then again it's a server book, not a programming book.

In a nutshell, if you want to get up to speed on MS-SQL 7.0 and know little or nothing about it, get this book. If you already know generally how to use and manage MS-SQL 7.0, then skip this book, and move on to something more advanced. ><>
