Summary: The shape of things to come
Review: "Next" is a prime example of what should be considered the design that will take us into the coming millenium. Inspirational, and informative it shows us the work and tells about the process behind the scene. As an illustrator I love the fact that Mr. Reyes includes comments by, and work by Illustrators. From lables to posters, "Next " is an insightful look at current design.

Summary: Cool and inspiring
Review: As a magazine art director, I found this book filled with cool and inspiring examples of graphic art and design. There is a broad range of styles and approaches and great work from people I was not previously familiar with. ... I found the author's own work to be strong and provocative. My only complaint is with the title, Next. Graphic design is a rapidly evolving field stylistically, and this book is less a look at the future and more of a contemporary snapshot of a vibrant group of artists. But that does not diminish from the power and impact of this collection.

Summary: A Waste of Money
Review: Ever feel like you've been cheated? Anyone that knows anything about graphic design and thumbs through this book will instantly realize they have been duped by the title. "The New Generation in Graphic Design" would have been an appropriate title if this book had been published in 1985. With it's emphasis on "Grunge Design" and lop-sided with designers from Seattle (and the authors own mediocre work) this book hardly represents anything new but, rather, outdated and boring design. Wake up Mr. Reyes, it's 2001.

Summary: it's called "personal style"
Review: I bought this book recently because I used to follow Mr. Reyes' design, back when he was the designer of The Rocket, the Seattle music-related newspaper.

"Next" is a treat for me -- not only because I saw current work by people whose art I have long appreciated, but because Mr. Reyes offered a well-considered picture of how contemporary designers have evolved since the "D.I.Y" aesthetic of The Rocket.

Summary: A great book
Review: I found Next to be a great book on contemporary graphic design, essential in representing an aesthetic that is generally under-represented in most other design annuals and survey books. The author, who's won numerous awards in his professional career, has done his research: he presents designers who are NOT the dozen or so "usual suspects" or "name" designers over-represented in most other books. The book is also less New-York-centric, though not exclusionary, than a lot of other books of its kind.

An intriguing and essential look at a new generation of designers.
