Summary: It will help get you on track
Review: A good book that will put you on the track towards linux greatness. No frustration, just answers. Dont expect the book to keep you busy for too long. Its easy as pie.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Good book for Linux newcomers
Review: A recommended reading after installing Linux Caldera or the KDE desktop. Clearly written, I read half of the book the first night and the second night I was (finally) fine tuning -both, my laptop and Desktop KDE's. I wish the book had expanded on multimedia for linux.

Summary: This book and the provided software is great for beginners
Review: Any book that is titled "The Complete Idiots Guide" will certainly not be exhaustive in all that can be known on the given topic. However, this book is a great beginner's guide. The author is well aware that his audience may not be experts' in Linux or Unix and caters to them just fine. I certainly do not know Unix, yet I found myself up and running productively in a reasonably short period of time. Caldera's 1.3 version of Linux which comes with the book installed with little trouble and the KDE GUI interface will be no problem to anybody familiar with Windows. This book and Caldera's version of Linux gets two thumbs up!

Summary: A bit more information and it would have been the best...
Review: Great book. It takes you through installation, customization and some troubleshooting, and it even manages to explain kernel recompilation in a simple way! If your computer is a simple, bare bones workstation, great. If it's not (and you know it's not) then the book is still great, but not quite complete: a lot of people out there own soundcards, scanners, joysticks and gamepads, and the book says little or nothing about those relevant pieces of hardware. So, it gets 4 stars.

Summary: When they say Beginner, they REALLY mean beginner....
Review: I bought this book because I know absolutely nothing about linux, but I do know about computers - and that's where I was dissapointed. If you are new to computers and you want to get on the Linux bandwagon then this is the book for you. But, If you know what a window, a button, and a toolbar is look somewhere else. It's doesn't seem like a bad book, but I definately needed some more meat to read. I'm returning it and buying an O'Reilly book.

Summary: Excellent upstart book for an upstart Operating System.
Review: I bought this book on a recommendation from my father who is an computer explorer extrordinaire. I found it to be very helpful with understanding the "already up and running" Linux system, but somewhat lacking in the "how to get up and running" department. The installation instructions come toward the end of the book and offer little or no explanation of Linux's FDISK program, which is absolutely nothing like any partioning program I've ever used. Talk about cryptic! However, once up and running, the OS is wonderful and there cannot be enough accolades given to the fine folks @ StarDivision.com for their EXCELLENT Office suite . Not a demo, but a full function group including a spreadsheet, word processor, the works, this suite free makes MS Office look like a billion-dollar boondoggle. Star Office is fully compatable with MS, and importing ang exporting is a snap. (That is if you can figure out how to get your Linux partition to talk to your DOS partition....). All in all, an excellent book to get for those curious about Linux.

Summary: It is good for beginer
Review: I finished the book in couple hours and got a basic idea of what's in Linux. However, it can only bring you that far. Reader will need to read other books in order to get a completed pic.

Summary: A good book for an interested Linux beginner.
Review: I have read this book and found it to be useful in getting started with the included version of Linux, Caldera Open Linux 1.3. It includes an office productivity suite (StarOffice 4.0) in the software packages.

If you are thinking of trying Linux then I would suggest that this book, with its included software, is perhaps the cheapest way to sample this alternate operating system on your computer. I installed it on an 'Japan only model' IBM 230Cs laptop with a DX/2 50 MHz CPU and 20 MB of RAM. It worked fine! Think how it would be with a Pentium chip and 64 MB of RAM! The KDE window manager system is excellent and will appeal to novice and experienced Linux users alike.

Give it a try! You might find that you enjoy using a stable, powerful operating system that makes the most of new and older computers.

Summary: EXCELLENT book for the beginner!
Review: I have several books on UNIX/Linux, but this is the one that helped me get up to speed! With the other books I got stuck several times, but this book is very easy to understand, and gives you all the necessary information to get started. If you are totally new to UNIX/Linux this book is a good place to start!
