Summary: 5 Stars Only For Book, But Not For Liars
Review: I buy this book thinking that I was going to learn something new, of course this book is an Excellent Resource for learning and a good teacher for beginners of Visual Basic 6.0 but what the book doesn't say it that will be good for a person interesting in learning this language to better go to any academy institution and study Computer Science and some programming language, because programming required a lot of math and algebra, etc so they can achive their dreams in becoming a software maker, why people are so greedy, I have ask a lot of people (software maker, developers), how I can learn and become a software maker and I have receive no answer yet, but I have learn by myself please go to college and get that Computer Science Degree. Note: Listen to this the book is the same Step by Step Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 ISBN 1-57231-809-0, Same books with different Cover I have both books, I cannot believe how people lie, Visual Basic Step by Step also by Michael Halvorson and these books are perfect twins. Computer Science Degree is what you need and a lot af Math 1+1=2 Algebra, Etc....

Summary: Clear, concise learning tool
Review: I found this book to be exceedingly well written and edited. I didn't know VB all that well before opening the book, and Mike's excellent examples really made the concepts clear. I definitely recommend it.

Summary: Very practical book about visual basic 6
Review: I really recommend this book to anyone who just learn visual basic. It's very well written and very practical. You won't get bored about reading this book.

Summary: Too much hand-holding and some code does not work
Review: Overall, it is a good book for a beginner, but I wish Halverson would maybe give more of a structure by which to do more programs on our own and perhaps give quizzes. Just completing lessons does not make you proficient with any language. Some of the code in the book does not work, starting with chapter 11 and 12 and then after that, all code works (however, that frustrated me and ruined the examples which were subseqent of and dependent on the exercises which contained the bad coding). However he does give some good programming secrets that will serve as a reference for the future when I need them. I only used this book so I could get some work on VB 6.0 before going on to try VBA w/Excel which is what I am working on now. I would still recommend this to anyone, but with caution.

Summary: So far the best VB book I could find
Review: This book covers the basics Of Visual Basic. In easy Skill learning lessons. Personally I used to a lesson a night, Since I didn't have time. It is very informative. I would reccomend this book to anybody intrested in making a good foundation in Visual Basic.

Summary: Unoriginal Approach to Learning Visual Basic
Review: This book is essentially a rephrasing of the VB Programmer's Guide supplied with the original software, except for some more detailed handling of Advanced Techniques in the last 5 chapters (100 out of 500 pp). The examples are verbatim from the Programmer's Guide, so if you have that you don't need this.Not much new to gain from this if you've gone through Visual Basic Step by Step.

Summary: Allows you to start to build a solid foundation in VB
Review: This book is very good for the following reasons: 1) It accepts (as must you) that VB is a robust and complex programming language that does not lend itself to being crammed in one book an subsequently forced down a readers throat as if it had to be digested all at once 2) Instead, this book takes a representative slice of VB that feeds you with knowledge without overwhelming you; and like a savory dish it tempts you with more (later - when you are ready for a second course) 3) Starting with a rock solid grounding in the basics, Halvorson gets you up and running quickly (little program treats - to keep with the food analogy). 4) He takes you deeper into the subject without overwhelming you, building on previous material (more of a reinforcement of basic concepts inherent in VB that you have to make part of your working vocabulary in order to use the tools effectively). 5) When you are done - you will want more and feel well prepared for it. Highly recommended! PS: This book is well edited and I found maybe 3 typos of little consequence - this is in itself very refreshing to see in a technical book these days. KUDOS!

This book has given me the confidence I need to move on to more advanced Visual Basic courses and other programming languages. I'm going to purchase the Visual Studio reference guides and the Visual Studio program before the end of the year and Ace every program in that package. This book has me thinking in code now and it's a great feeling.
