Rating: Summary: Total trash! Review: I'm no expert, but I've got some idea about Javascript. I signed this book out of the library to look up some stuff for a project I'm doing. This book LOOKS good, until you try to do something with it. It's complicated in every way--layout, writing, topic, organization. It covers a lot of ground, starting from the middle (apparently the writer originally planned to concentrate on layer effects). It gives adequate but not great explanations. All of this makes it completely useless for a real novice. Still, I've got some idea of the code. I should be able to puzzle out what's going on by comparing what the writer says to the code and pictures in the examples, right? Well, the examples are in black and white, which makes that a bit disorienting. But then I notice there's a CD, so I figure I'll load 'em up and compare on my computer. Turns out, the Javascript in the CD examples is totally buggy. From what I can tell, it's all written specifically for Netscape. Since I'm using Internet Explorer, I may as well not HAVE a computer. It's not like this was necessary. You can usually write Javascript so it's compatible with multiple browsers. But not a SINGLE ONE of his examples that I tried worked. You know what? I'm dropping my rating of this book. I was going to give it 2 stars, but now I think about it, that kind of carelessness doesn't deserve it. There's no excuse for a writer to pull that kind of narrow-minded garbage these days. Code that only works for one program is code that should be scrapped.
Rating: Summary: I use it as a reference Review: Ouch! Most of the reviews seem to trash this book. I've had this book for many years and I use it as a reference source for CSS syntax, and obscure properties. The CD comes with the examples already typed in and they work. Layers are an interesting concept and fun to try. The used book price was at less than $5 as I write this and that would be a great bargain for a reference book.
Rating: Summary: Pointless waste of money Review: The back cover of this book claims "Master the awesome web power of DHTML, style sheets and JavaScript 1.2/1.3!" The only thing you'll master is a JavaScript Debugger. Any professional web designer churning out this quality of worked would be fired. Even a casual user would be disappointed by the amateurish focus on a single (minority) browser. All of the 'code' is designed to run in Netscape only, what use is that? The issue of cross browser coding isn't even mentioned. The quality of the examples that do work is dreadful, most of them look like they've been designed in half an hour and make use of embarrassingly dated graphics. Save your money and time.
Rating: Summary: Not very simple ! Review: The outline of the book is not very linear. If you are an experienced web programmer maybe you'll use some of the tables of styles but everything else is hard to find and there's not much detail on how to use the method's. If you're a beginner to Styles and Html the only thing you will use is the little html tutorial at the end of the book. I do not recommend this book to a person who wishes to buid stylish web pages in an user centered form because it focuses mainly in programming for Netcape 4+ (not NS6). If you enjoy using the index every 5 minutes buy it otherwise don't !
Rating: Summary: A great resource for anyone who's doing website design. Review: This book does exactly what it says it will do and it's a great resource for anyone who's doing website design. It provides detailed information that is useful for anyone from a beginner to an expert in website design. If you want to learn about cascading style sheets in both CSS and JavaScript, then this is the book for you. It also covers all of the new capabilites of version 1.2 and 1.3 of JavaScript and integrates it into DHTML. It has lots of working examples which illustrate specific concepts that are easy to understand. It also has a substantial number of very practical real-world application examples and the most complex examples are thoroughly explained. I highly reccommend this book to anyone designing web pages, even if you mostly use straight HTML. The HTML primer is a great reference and there are lots of reference sheets from the book that are on the CD-ROM that you can easily print out as a handy memory-jog. It seems to me that the previous reviewer gave an unwarranted rating which was based on her initial misperception of the purpose of the book. The "Review" information at the site, which was taken from the Back Cover of the book, clearly states that the book was Navigator-oriented. Just get the book: you'll learn a lot and be glad you did.
Rating: Summary: I Don't like this book much Review: This book does serve for a decent reference for seeing how to use code, but the theory is nonexistent. It basically says here is some code and this is what its doing. There are very few paragraphs that are not explaining code. It doesn't tell why to do things nor what is and isn't bad code. Other reviewers were right when they called this book bizarre. To the books benefit I did learn quit a bit from reading it. If you have object programming experience or are familiar with object programming "JavaScript The Definitive Guide" from O'Reilly publishing is a much better book.

Rating: Summary: High Hopes Review: This book has a lot of examples. So many that most people would not use all of them for 5 different webpages. The only problem is it is not user friendly. Good for someone who knows the language, but NOT reccommended for a person trying to learn the language.
