Summary: A very useful book
Review: I have consulted this book probably more than any of thecomputer books on my shelf and am surprised at times of how useful itis in those crucial moments. Stuff which I though was missing in the begining was always there. I hadn't read properly.

One has to read the book carefully since there is lots of information for the reader. This was my first introduction to the Linux world and really think that the book has helped me a great deal.

The caldera Cd that comes with it has been a pleasure to have too. As I mentioned I didn't even know how to install linux. The book helped. I got the book a few weeks before the actual computer so I went over the pages again and again. It is not the same as having a computer and the book together. One tends to be lazy and rather try 100 things before sitting down and consulting the book properly. It makes a difference.

I am surprised at the bad coments. Just scanning someone had complained that nowhere is a mention of "shutdown -h 0". Well look at page 38.

Summary: Sam's doesn't listen.
Review: I informed Sam's (as many readers likely did) that the original edition of this book neglected to discuss shutting down linux. Of course, after going through the trama of installing it via the books instructions, no one will want to install it again after they wipe it out during the first shut down. This could have been avoided. Anyone who buys it, should demand a refund.

Summary: Shutting down is dicussed in the brand new 2nd edition
Review: I just purchased this book and am now reading the reviews. I don't know how good this book is yet, but I know that shutting down and rebooting is discussed on page 38 of the book.

Summary: quite good but ...
Review: I read the book, in the beginning I thought that it was goin to be one of those slow and easy books, but that changed when I got to the 6th hour. The only negative comment I have is that the version of Caldera they use is outdated, you MUST download the latest version from [website] but you musn't forget to install the version from the CD because the difference between these two linuxes is huge (Not to worry, the commands in the shell work as they should).
I think it is a good -not great, but good- way to start using linux, but if you want to be an expert user, you'll need the linux Bilbe, of course.

I do recomend you to buy this book
P.S.: I appologize for my english, I'm 16 years old and I live in Flanders (Belgium), so I probably will have made a few mistakes. None the less I hope you understand that I think this book is good, but not 100% comprehensive, like the bibles.

Summary: Aweful
Review: I'm a complete newbie when it comes to Linux and I thought that this book was the worst anyone could ever come up with. The writing style is completely incomprehensible and the only good thing about this book is the CD that comes with it. I gave it 1 star because it was the least you could give.

Summary: i was going to buy
Review: just to let everyone know(rather you see this as good or bad) i was going to buy Sams Teach Youself Linux in 24 Hours unil i read the nasty reviews that went with it. I am looking for a good introductory book to Linux, if anyone has a clue, please let me know.

Summary: A GOOD example of BAD technical writing!
Review: Possibly the WORST computer "how to" book I've read to date. So bad, that it would make an excellent addition to any training program in tech writing. Something like..."Students...please read this book and then tell me what is wrong with it".

I kept the CD ( Caldera OpenLinux ) and trashed the book. It really is THAT bad!

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: The book and the CD are outdated
Review: Significant parts of this book deal, not with Open Linux 2.2 (what's on the CD), but with an earlier distribution. Caldera has now released Open Linux 2.3, so even the CD is past its prime.

The book seems to be an amalgam of earlier writing with some new stuff shoved in. There is no way to start with Hour 1 and proceed to Hour 24, because most of the lessons refer to later topics. Very little, if anything, on troubleshooting when things go wrong.

Summary: What's going on?
Review: Since when can we write reviews about books that haven't been published. Some idiot gave one star to the wrong book. I'll try to make a little difference in the rating
